I’ve completed the second draft of my latest story, Mike + Marti 4-Ever. Here’s the first paragraph:
Mike Lauria sat before his laptop viewing a youtube post, an array of black and white photos, each gradually taking on color. He was amazed at how natural they looked, so much better than the first colorized films he’d seen. He wondered how it was done, if each were hand-painted, which seemed unlikely. He supposed an egghead had invented a program that did it at the click of a mouse. He made a handwritten note of it on a list he intended to Google.

My thanks to the kind folks who donated and bought books on this brisk beautiful day. Here’s what sold: four hardcovers in Russian, including Tolstoy’s War and Peace; Those Who Love: A Biographical Novel of Abigail and John Adams by Irwin Shaw; and The Dirty Dozen by E. M. Nathanson. I’m surprised the same hardcover I sold of the latter lists for only $6.24 at Amazon, while a reissued, post 2000 large paperback is $130. The mass market paperback I read back in the day and still own goes for $17.96. While I enjoyed the novel, I love the movie, Hollywood entertainment at it best. The star, Lee Marvin, a combat veteran, was ambivalent about it, appreciating the artistry but frowning at its unrealistic portrayal of war. It’s a movie not a film like Saving Private Ryan (1998). While I appreciate the latter, I find it very hard to watch. I’ve seen it only once. I’ve watched The Dirty Dozen more than ten times.
