It’s National Cliché Day. I’m sure I use some in my writing and probably a lot in everyday speech. Here are the first ten of 681 listed at be-a-better-writer.com:
1. a chip off the old block
2. a clean slate
3. a dark and stormy night
4. a far cry
5. a fine kettle of fish
6. a good/kind soul
7. a loose cannon
8. a pain in the neck/butt
9. a penny saved is a penny earned
10. a tough row to hoe
The only one I use frequently is 8, more in speech than writing. I don’t believe I’ve ever used 3, 5, 6, 9 or 10 in my work. Maybe it would be fun to create a short story using all 681.

Headline from foxnews.com: “Sixth year of eligibility for 27-year-old Memphis basketball player denied.” Maybe he should change his name to Blutarsky: “Seven years of college down the drain.” National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978), screenplay by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller, photo of the late John Belushi from GI:

Quiet session of the floating book shop today. My Thanks to my Constant Benefactress, who bought Zoya by Danielle Steel for a friend; and to the woman who purchased a stack of Russian magazines; and to the one who took home two cookbooks: Nobu Now by Nobuyuki Matsuhisa and Nobu West by Nobu Matsuhisa and Mark Edwards… There were a couple of amusing instances. For some reason the local train station was closed. Two people asked for advice — in Spanish. I tried to tell them to take the bus to the Coney Island station, where four lines run. My Italian is even more comical these days. Pictured: Andrew Sachs as Manuel in Fawlty Towers, photo from GI:
