66 & More
Keith Haring designed carousel on display at NYC’s Hudson Yards. It’s not operational. It was part of a summer 1987 exhibit that ran in Hamburg, Germany, then was stored away in a Texas warehouse, then rescued by a group that includes singer Drake. There are also pieces by Basquiat, Lichtenstein, Dali and others. Photo from nypost.com:
RIP Bill Bergey, 79. Born in southwestern NY, not far from Buffalo, he was a Little All-American at Arkansas St.. I saw him in action before he turned pro when the Indians traveled to Kalamazoo in 1968 to take on my alma mater, Western Michigan. The Broncos won 20–0, despite Bergey’s efforts. I don’t recall exactly why the fans got on him, but a taunting chant of “66, 66, 66…” began. He earned a degree in Phys. Ed. and a commission in the Army Reserve, rank of Lieutenant. He was drafted in the second round by the Bengals, the 31st pick overall. He played for them until 1973, then was traded to the Eagles, where he played until the 1980 season when a knee injury slowed him. Here are individual accomplishments: two-time First-team All-Pro, three-time Second-team All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowl, AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Cincinnati Bengals 50th Anniversary Team, Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame, Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. He was voted the Eagles’ MVP three times by teammates. His last game was Super Bowl XV, a 27–10 loss to the Raiders. He finished his career with 27 interceptions, 16 sacks and 21 fumble recoveries. His jersey is worn by a character in The Silver Linings Playbook (2012). After retiring, he did commentary on radio and TV for the team for 20 years. He was a father of three. Well done, Sir. If you’ve ever wondered about the effectiveness of the cheap brand of AA batteries, I’ve kept track. I recently bought a Panasonic electric shaver. The cheap brand lasted 13 shaves. This morning I did a 27th with Duracell. The cheap brand is fine for remote controls but little else.
Just when you think government can’t get any more absurd, headline from foxnews.com: “Blue state violent crime victims ordered to address career criminal by preferred pronouns.” Just call he/she/it slime.
Among today’s celebrations, it’s National Thank You Note Day. To all supporters of my literary efforts, photo from GI:
The programming of TV networks will be a lot more attractive now that holiday movies are gone. Yay!
No wind, sunshine, perfect for curbside business. My thanks to whoever left a bag of goodies in the garden at my book nook and to the gentleman who pulled up to the curb and dropped off a bunch of items. There wasn’t a book in either donation, but plenty of good stuff. My thanks also to the those who bought and swapped. Here’s what sold: the audio book version of Believing the Lie by Elizabeth George; Life Is Beautiful (1997) on DVD; a James Taylor CD; a Polaroid camera; two ceramic knickknacks of cats; a carrying case; a piece of costume jewelry; 50 Shades of Gray by E L James; The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger; 20,000 Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne; Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson; The Forsythe Saga by John Galsworthy; The Grilling Bible by Publications International Ltd. and Marilyn Pocius; and two books in Russian. I am blessed.
