Last night Movies!, channel 5–2 on over the air antennas in NYC, ran 88 Minutes (2007), a so-so thriller starring Al Pacino. In researching it at IMDb, I came across a man who is having an impressive career, Brooklyn-born Jon Avnet. There are nine titles under his name as writer, 26 as director and 102 as producer of film and TV fare. On Broadway his plays have received 35 Tony nominations and 12 awards. He has received two Emmy nominations: Outstanding Drama/Comedy Special: The Burning Bed (1984) and Outstanding Miniseries: The Starter Wife (2007). His most successful big screen work is probably Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), which he both produced and directed. On the Great White Way he co-produced the wildly popular Spamalot, and soloed on revivals of The Country Girl and Inherit the Wind. Kudos, sir.

Perhaps the most amusing headline of the day, from nypost.com: “Notorious B.I.G.’s $6 plastic crown sells for $594,750 in auction.” I couldn’t help but think of the Bard’s immortal words: “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” — Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part 2.

I assume the pandemic is having an effect on Amazon deliveries. I had to cancel one books order that went MIA and reorder. It was more than a month before I received the goods. Since the wires on my old electric shaver are fraying, I ordered a new one, Sunday morning, I believe. I’ve had no luck with cordless, so I opted for the old style. It was billed as “Free Shipping.” I then noticed that the order contained a seven dollar charge for fast delivery, by Friday. I changed it back to the free option, scheduled to arrive Saturday. I got it yesterday, Tuesday.

My thanks to Crazy Joe, scourge of talk radio hosts and Facebook, who as usual overcompensated me for a bunch of non-fiction that included a huge tome on healthy eating habits; and to the woman who selected a Danielle Steel paperback; and to Janet, who went home with The Wicked Wit of Queen Elizabeth II by Karen Dolby; and to the Frenchman, who purchased Diary of a Madman by Nikolai Gogol.
