Sub-headline from nypost.com: “Fire Department brass recently ordered an East Village ladder company to remove its ‘red line’ American flag honoring six fallen brothers killed on 9/11 — after a resident complained it was ‘fascist’.” He/she would have fit perfectly in Stalin’s USSR.

RIP Barbara Rush, 97. Born in Denver, she moved to southern Cal, graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara, and took acting lessons at the Pasadena Playhouse. She was comfortable on the stage and big and small screen. There are 114 titles under her name at IMDb, career spanning 1950–2017. In 1954 she received a Golden Globe as the Most Promising Female Newcomer for her work in It Came from Outer Space. Despite her skill and looks, she never scored a breakout role. Here are some of the films she graced: When Worlds Collide (1951), Magnificent Obsession (1954), The Young Lions (1958), Robin and the Seven Hoods (1964), the outstanding Hombre (1967). On TV she did guest shots on just about every primetime series in production during her heyday, and she appeared in 75 episodes of Peyton Place, 38 of Flamingo Road, 38 of All My Children and ten of 7th Heaven. Married three times, she was a mom of two. Well done, Madam. Thank you. Photo from Google Images:

With age comes an increase in errors. I had a doozy this morning. The cashier at Stop n Shop seemed to shortchange me five bucks. She didn’t question it. After I’d put all the groceries away, I noticed a fin at the bottom of the bag. How I’d failed to notice it dropping from my grasp is beyond me. I’d never seen the young woman before. I didn’t want her to get in trouble, so I went back, egg on my face. She wasn’t there. I explained the error to the customer service rep and returned the money. Argh!

On cue, April showers have arrived and are forecast through Thursday, putting the kibosh on the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. I hiked to the Coney Island DMV to return my license plates. I was in and out in 20 minutes. That helped fill time. I also cancelled my insurance.
