A Lady Passes
RIP Kelly Preston, 57, who succumbed to cancer. Always a lovely presence on the big or small screen, there are 72 titles beneath her name at IMDb, the most notable Jerry Maguire (1996). She made multiple appearances on several prime time shows such as Medium. She handled with great grace the tabloid fodder her marriage to John Travolta attracted. Here is a quote attributed to her: “There’s the jiggle factor in Hollywood. Once I was at an audition and they told me, “You must show your breasts!” and I was like, get outta town. I just laughed and slammed the door on my way out.” Well done, madam. Thank you.
From an article at nypost.com: “… a Washington Post poll from 2016 that found nine in ten Native Americans weren’t offended by the NFL team’s controversial name.” Is the name change being powered by white guilt? Has the opinion of Indians changed in the interim? How ‘bout a new poll?
I’m not comfortable faulting any leader for the response to Corona, but the praise New York is getting at the moment in some circles is insane. Here are numbers from Rich Lowry’s op-ed piece at NYP: “In New York, about 32,500 people have died. In Florida, a state of comparable population, about 4300 people have died. In Texas and California, both bigger states, about 3300 and 7000 people have died. In per-capita terms, New York has had 1668 deaths per million. In contrast, Arizona has had 308, Florida 199, California 179 and Texas 114.”
Sign of the times in a headline at foxnews.com: “Record numbers of Americans try to buy guns.” Who can blame them?
I just heard Sean Hannity use a nifty term to describe his interest in purchasing Goya products and donating them to charity: “buycott.” Kudos. I forgot to buy the other day. I hope I remember Thursday morning.
I don’t know if there’s a more amusing headline today than this from foxnews.com: “$40-per-bottle ‘anti-racism’ beer pulled because it looks racist.” On the list of stupid ideas, this is heading to the top of the chart with a bullet, as this pic will manifest. What were they thinking? Maybe the fact that it’s manufactured in Sweden explains its ignorance of the KKK.
Two ladies saved the day during the floating book shop’s last half hour. My thanks to Evelyn, who bought Danielle Steel’s Remembrance, and to the elderly woman who was stuck in Florida for two months, who purchased eight cook books. She said: “I got out in the nick of time.” Evelyn says she’s moving there in November, surrendering to her husband’s desire. She’s uncomfortable about it, as she’s lived in Brooklyn her entire life.
