A Voice Stilled, Another Soaring
RIP actress/singer, Bronx girl Diahann Carroll, 84. As a teenager she won an Arthur Godfrey Talents Scouts contest, which led to work in night clubs, where her voice and beauty drew attention. She won a Tony in 1962 for the Richard Rodgers musical No Strings, an interracial love story. She sang on all of TV’s popular variety shows. There are 58 titles under her name at IMDb. She is best known for Julia, which ran from 1968-’71, 86 episodes, the first time a black starred in a prime time series in a non-servant role. She also did 74 episodes of Dynasty and 25 of White Collar. She made multiple appearances on other shows as well. She received an Oscar nomination in 1974 for her performance in Claudine. Two autobios were published in her name, in ’86 and ’08. She married four times, the last time to singer Vic Damone. Here’s a quote attributed to her: “I learned quickly that almost any time a third world face became prominent on TV, we became responsible for the whole minority community.” No pressure there. Well done, madam. Thank you.
Lauren Daigle’s You Say topped out at #29 on the Billboard pop chart. It has now set a record on the Christian chart — 62 weeks at #1! It was written by Daigle, Paul Mabury and Jason Ingram, and won a Grammy in that category. It has gone double platinum. For those late to the party like me, here’s a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIaT8Jl2zpI And here’s the singer:
From nypost.com, edited by yours truly: A group protesting how the UK spends vast sums on fossil fuel exploration while paying lip service to global warming concerns purchased a decommissioned fire truck on eBay in hopes of spraying fake blood on the British Treasury building. They lost control of the hose and flooded the street. Four were arrested.
The unemployment rate fell to a 50-year low, 3.5%. That must disappoint leftists. A troubling headline at foxnews.com dampens the good news: “Mall vacancies reach post-recession high as department stores vanish.” Everyone but leftists hope this is simply the evolution of the sector, the dominance of web alternatives.
It was so windy at my usual nook that I couldn’t display certain books prominently. My thanks to the gentleman who settled his tab, and to the sweet elderly woman who bought a novel in Russian; and to Ira, who purchased a book on beauty; and to Wolf, who went home with a two volume set of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace in Russian; and to the gentleman who donated those and about ten other hardcovers in that language.
