All Cylinders
The book below details the work of Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), a militia that fought ISIS. Kobani is a city just south of Syria’s border with Turkey.
Here’s an uplifting headline from foxnews.com: “Homes selling faster than ever even as prices rise to all-time highs.”
The second amendment is alive and well in this state, headline from FN: “Iowa governor signs ‘constitutional carry’ bill that removes permit requirements for handguns.”
The NBA or NFL can be substituted in this headline from FN: “MLB walks away from American city but does business with China’s brutal regime.” Selective outrage, phony virtue signaling. Not sure about the NHL, but recall that it too capitulated to BLM.
Friday night’s movie fix, courtesy of Netflix by mail, was very satisfying. Set in the area of Atlantic City, Low Tide (2019) is the story of four lower middle class male teenagers who are robbing houses. Authorities are onto them. Soon they begin betraying one another. The plot is well drawn, the dialogue realistic, and the acting of the young members of the cast is first rate. I particularly liked the performances of Daniel Zolghadri as a weasel and Kristen Froseth as a vacationer. The principle adults are played by actors with extensive credits, the late Mike Hodge as a pawnbroker, and Shea Whigham, who was in 56 episodes of Boardwalk Empire, as the police sergeant. The flick was written and directed by Kevin McMullin, his first full length feature following a short. It is an impressive debut. I look forward to his future work. There’s a bit of violence but far less than in most crime dramas. I didn’t notice any profanity, although I’m sure there must have been some given the ages of the characters. 2000+ users at IMDb have rated Low Tide, forging to a consensus of 6.3 on a scale of ten. It would appeal most to those who enjoy reading between the lines, as several points are not spelled out. Thankfully, it avoids preaching, although it is about morality. I liked Andrew Ellmaker’s cinematography. The running time is only 86 minutes, another plus. I found no info on its box office take. Here are the four thieves in character, girl-watching, left to right, Jaeden Martel, Keean Johnson, Alex Neustaedter & Daniel Zolghadri. All have impressive resumes:
It was a great day for doing business curbside. My thanks to the gentleman who bought seven novels by Dick Francis translated to Russian, and to the woman who purchased a book in that language; and to the one who did a swap and buy of said; and to the gentleman who took home a Bible; and to Bill Brown, author of Words and Guitar: A History of Lou Reed’s Music and other fine books, who selected two Do Wop CDs and In Search of Silence by Poorna Bell.
