Here’s fodder for writers and filmmakers, from a headline at nypost.com: “Prostitute charged in chef’s death may have even more victims.”
RIP Carol Lynley, 77, who had a long career in Hollywood, most of it in TV movies and guest shots in popular series, always a lovely presence. She began as a child model for Sears Roebuck in NYC, her home town. She did a little Broadway and won Golden Globe awards in consecutive years, 1959-’60, as the Most Promising Newcomer. In March 1965 she did an eight-page spread for Playboy. Her career spanned from 1956–2006. The role she will probably be remembered for most is as one of the survivors in the deliciously silly The Poseidon Adventure (1972). Here’s a quote attributed to her: “I’ve never been in a scandal. I’ve never been caught running naked down a highway. I’ve not tried to shoot anybody. Nobody’s ever tried to shoot me. My child is legitimate… I’ve never been to Betty Ford… No porn… No drug addictions… I’ve outlived three of my doctors. So if you’re going to write a juicy book, I’ve got a problem.” Well done, Madam. Thank you.
I usually watch a movie from Netflix on Friday night. This week’s arrival was Climax (2019), described in a blurb at IMDb as: “French dancers gather in a remote, empty school building to rehearse on a wintry night. The all-night celebration morphs into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn their sangria is laced with LSD.” Unfortunately, the subtitles were microscopic, at least those of the French. Curiously, those in English were nice and big. I sat close to the screen, but it didn’t help much. I didn’t think to don my reading glasses, but doubt they would have helped much, as the dialogue often whizzed by. I gave up after about 20 minutes. For those who find the premise intriguing, 29,000+ users at IMDb have rated it, a consensus of 7.2 on a scale of ten. It is rated R.
Here’s another victim of Trump Derangement Syndrome, headline from foxnews.com: “NYT columnist discloses ‘insomnia’ she’s had since ‘cursed night’ of Trump’s election.” When Obama was re-elected, I had a tough night sleep but was back to normal the next day. Insomnia over politics — it sounds as if this woman needs psychiatric care.
So, who will face New England in the Super Bowl? My guess — the Cowboys.
It was quite a day at the floating book shop. Several moms immediatelym went at the kids’ books, and a gentleman bought a novel in Russian. A long dry spell ensued, then a young man approached. He was curious about Adjustments. I asked if he played high school football. Turns out Rene` is a fellow alum, Lafayette class of 2014, who considers anyone who played football there as family. It was music to my ears. He purchased both that book and Exchanges. Minutes later a woman I recalled as having a storage locker filled with antiques and art pictorials showed. I didn’t feel bad about not remembering her name, Carolyn, as she hadn’t remembered mine. I asked about her son, who lives out west and has been battling cancer for ten years. He was close to being discharged from the facility in which he is housed when he got into a fight with another patient and suffered a broken hip and other injuries. She bought A Hitch in Twilight. And, just before I was about to close shop, young Bek, a junior at New Utrecht H.S., came along and asked for philosophy. I showed him At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Others by Sarah Bakewell. It was named one of the Ten Best Books of 2016 by the New York Times. Bek took it home. He is thrilled to be back in the states after a month in the place of his birth, Uzbekistan. He has been Americanized. Yay!
My thanks to all the buyers.
