RIP composer Angelo Badalamenti, 85. Born in Bensonhurst, he too was a Lafayette H.S. alum. He began piano lessons at eight. As a teenager he accompanied singers at resorts in the Catskills. He earned a Master’s from the Manhattan School of Music. There are 97 titles under his name at IMDb, career spanning 1973–2020. His first success was writing songs for Nina Simone. He also worked with Marianne Faithfull, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Bassey, Patti Austin, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, Roberta Flack and Dolores O’Riordan. His biggest mark was made in film and TV scoring. He frequently collaborated with David Lynch. He was nominated for three Emmys in 1990 for his work on Twin Peaks. That same year he received a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance: Twin Peaks Theme. In 1993 he received the Saturn Award for Best Music: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. In 2008 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from World Soundtrack Awards. In 2011 the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers bestowed the Henry Mancini Award on him. One of the best aspects of working on a short book is that revision isn’t as tedious as usual. I’ve completed round five of Coincidence, a novella, 23,500 words. I was thrilled when I discovered one is able to email a PDF version of Google Docs to self. Unfortunately, I don’t see a way of uploading it to my desktop, which would allow me to send it to Amazon/KDF when ready. I hope to find a roundabout way of doing it, which would eliminate the need to rent Microsoft Word for a month or two.
After freezing my buns off at my regular nook the past two days, I took the floating book shop on the road and was fortunate to find a spot that provided sunshine the full session. And business was above average. All the buyers were women. My thanks, ladies, especially to the one who double parked and took her time despite her dog going nuts in the car. Here’s what sold: a hardcover in Russian, a beautifully illustrated Hebrew-English kids’ book; The Last Thing He Told Her by Laura Dave; War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells; A Medicine for Melancholy and Other Stories by Ray Bradbury; Dazzle and Mistral’s Daughter both by Judith Krantz; and An Angel for Emily by Jude Deveraux. I am blessed.
