Another Day in Paradise Lost

SMH. Sometimes you wonder about the human race. Headline from nypost.com: “Maui residents say they are being looted, ‘robbed at gunpoint’ as wildfires rage.” Makes one hope there’s a hell.

As hostile as things are politically in the USA at present, let’s hope it never gets this bad. From NYP: “Political leader in Ecuador is killed less than a week after presidential candidate’s assassination.”

Read it and weep. From NYP: “Inflation forcing Americans to spend $709 a month more than they did 2 years ago: economist.”

From NYP, a new wrinkle on an old game: “Self-driving robotaxis being used for ‘no boundaries’ sex in San Francisco: ‘The windshield was fogged over’.” Sounds like fodder for a porn script, although I believe those types of flicks are passe’, killed by cut to the chase web smut.

Indictment four of Trump. Can’t wait to see his poll numbers, which have risen with each attack. Will they finally reverse? Stay tuned.

Headline from newsmax.com: “Report: U.S. Sees Record Rise in People Who Are Homeless.” According to the article by Michael Katz, 11% this year. Reasons cited: “… shortage of affordable rental units, and the ongoing opioid crisis… end of pandemic-era policies such as financial aid and eviction moratoriums.” Liberals must be overjoyed by all the folks who become potential wards of the government.

Headline from Yahoo Sports: “Trentyn Flowers suddenly decommits from Louisville, will play in Australia’s NBL.” As the Rodgers & Hammerstein song says, this is “one of my favorite things.” Kudos for eschewing the farce that college basketball has become, young man.

I know it’s a forlorn hope, but I’m lovin’ this. Headline from foxnews.com: “Native American group receives ‘tidal wave’ of support to restore Redskins name.”

“Put me in, Coach.” Bear interrupts Tennessee high school football practice. Photo from foxnews.com:

I spoke to someone who experienced the Lionel Richie concert fiasco. Like everyone else, Sam and his Mrs. sat waiting for him to show Friday night. According to radio talk show host Mark Simone, management was at fault, as they are supposed to monitor the weather constantly. Anyway, the show went off beautifully last night. Richie apologized profusely. Sam was disappointed the Garden didn’t offer a 20-buck concession voucher or a token to that effect. It’s outrageous but not surprising that nothing was proffered.

I got a bit crazy today. Since my car is parked in one of the prime spots in terms of curbside business, I do not want to move it until closing the floating book shop on Thursday when Friday’s alternate side regulation forces it. So I walked to Marine Park Radiology, where I had a cat scan scheduled for 9:30 AM. I had time to fill. It took about an hour. The scenery around the park was great. The only worry was rain, which amounted to refreshing sprinkles. I took the Avenue U bus back to the neighborhood, thrilled the MTA still accepts coins. Only one other passenger used cash. Most used a metrocard. Three young women held their phones to a payment device. Once I got off, I had five more long blocks to cover. I was a bit tired but happy the plan had worked. I ate lunch and set out only 15 minutes later than usual. My thanks to Dina, who bought Courting Mr. Lincoln by Louis Bayard, Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan and The Eleventh Commandment by Jeffrey Archer; and to my Constant Benefactress, who purchased The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan; and to the gentleman who took home a huge tome on Russian history; and the one who did a swap of DVDs in that language. I’m beat.
