Another Day in the USA
I’ve adapted the following from a friend’s Facebook post: “… If the federal government took everything from billionaires via taxation, EVERYTHING, the revenue would fund the federal government for approximately seven months. 400 wealthiest people = $2.96 trillion, Federal spending 2019 = $4.53 trillion… going one step further, a 100% taxation of 401K’s would generate $3.7 trillion, which would keep the government going another 10 months, a combined total of 17 months. Kudos, Gary. Thanks. He believes we’re headed for financial collapse. I don’t know what to think.
Here’s poetic justice in a headline at nypost.com: “De Blasio blasted for hiring ‘another white guy’ to run the NYPD.”
NFL: The Ravens have given Patriot-haters hope. Now the trick is for them to capture home field advantage throughout the playoffs, which is unlikely… The Seahawks continue to take their fans on a wild ride… The Chargers took their frustrations out on the Packers… The Steelers are not dead yet… Credit must be given to Jon Gruden for elevating the Raiders to a tough out… Here’s a shout out to Panther’s backup QB Kyle Allen, who has completed 60% of his passes and thrown nine TDs against four INTs. The team has won five of his six starts. Today it was announced that starter Cam Newton was placed on injured reserve, ending his season… One never knows how a bold move will turn out, but the Chargers calling London home sounds really dumb. Even if management were able to resurrect the SST to reduce travel time, it’s bizarre… It’s not only that the Jets stink year after year, it’s the embarrassing gaffs they commit… No change in how easy the Giants’ defense makes it for the opposition… Here’s second year pro Kyle Allen:
Nationals’ closer Sean Doolittle boycotted the team’s appearance at the White House, World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg denies having snubbed the President, catcher Kurt Susuki wore a MAGA hat and got a hug from Trump, and the outraged went wild on Twitter — par for the course in ever evolving America.
It was an interesting session of the floating book shop. For the first time in almost three years at my usual nook, I worked without the scaffold overhead. Fortunately, it didn’t rain, although the sky was threatening the entire time. My thanks to the gentleman who, despite not finding any Russian books to his liking, bought Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie, Selected Poems by John Updike, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and non-fiction on Paris; and to the woman who purchased two Janet Evanovich thrillers; and to the one who took home another two cook books; and to the young woman who selected Poetry magazine and a work of non-fiction; and to Lynn, who chose Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross and a paperback about the Amish that had Amnesia in the title; and to the woman who bought two children’s books; and to the one who purchased a set of 310 flash cards on human anatomy; and to Crazy Joe, who selected The Shame Factor: Heal Your Deepest Fears and Set Yourself Free by Stephan B. Poulter Ph.D. I think the display was more consumer friendly, especially given the absence of the shadow the scaffold cast. I took advantage of the ledge that surrounds the garden. Here’s what it looked like:
