Another Great Passes

RIP Donald Sutherland, 88. Born in New Brunswick, Canada, he earned degrees from the University of Toronto in engineering and drama. He chose wisely which course to follow. He was working steadily in minor parts, then broke out with his hilarious take in The Dirty Dozen (1967). Soon he was in another box office smash, M*A*S*H (1970), then Kelly’s Heroes (1970), then Klute (1971). Even as a leading man he had a quirkiness about him that endeared him to audiences. There are 200 titles under his name at IMDb, career spanning 1962 to the present, one work to appear posthumously. Here are five other films of his I really enjoy: Don’t Look Now (1974), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Eye of the Needle (1981), The Italian Job (2003). On TV he was in 19 episodes of Commander in Chief, 23 of Dirty Sexy Money, eight of The Pillars of the Earth, 34 of Crossing Lines, six of Ice, nine of Trust, six of The Undoing, six of Swimming with Sharks, eight of Lawman: Bass Reeves, as well as many guest appearances on primetime fare. He was nominated for two Emmys, winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special, Citizen X in 1995. Somehow he was never nominated for an Oscar even in a supporting role, but the Academy atoned for its sin by bestowing an honorary award in 2018. Here’s a quote attributed to him: “I was up for a great part but they told me: ‘Sorry, you’re the best actor but this part calls for a guy-next-door type. You don’t look as if you’ve ever lived next door to anyone.’” Married three times, he was a father of five. Thank you, Sir. Photo from Google Images:

Uh-oh. I have something in common with an actor who has always seemed a flake. Headline from nypost.com: “Woody Harrelson refuses to own a cell phone, doesn’t want to be ‘readily available’.” Although I own one, I relate to the feeling. Since I gave up my car, the phone almost never leaves the apartment.

Elites have a new playground. From NYP: “$10,000-per-month Continuum wellness club opens in Greenwich Village.” Riff-raff begone!

From NYP: “I eat raw bull testicles every day to boost my testosterone — haters say I’m insane.” Bullseye.

Scary. From NYP: “More companies announce bankruptcies and closures, citing inflation as almost 3,200 stores face shuttering in 2024: poll.” According to the article by Bethany Blankley, “… a 24% increase from 2023.”

It’s American Eagle Day. Fie to those trying to clip its wings!

It was warmer today, but still not as hot as predicted. I guess the worst of the heat is sitting over the Hudson Valley. Works for me. It’s not even hot in my apartment yet. Operating in the shade has been a breeze for the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. My thanks to Cabbie, who donated a paperback thriller, and to The Frenchman, who took home three classical CDs; and to the young cutie in a Megadeath T-Shirt who bought CDs by Slayer and Pantera; and to the young beauty who purchased If at First…: How Great People Turned Setbacks into Great Success by Laura Fitzgerald, the first book sale in three days.
