Antidote to Sick World

With the world very sick at present, an antidote is needed. I choose football. When New England breezed through the first half of its schedule, I wouldn’t have been surprised if it went undefeated during the regular season. This was before anyone knew Baltimore would be so formidable. Still, it seemed the Patriots would be a lock for an AFC championship showdown with the Ravens. For eight games they didn’t miss TE Rob Gronkowski at all, and were still a top notch offense despite the absence of a deep threat. Then chinks in the armor appeared. No sweat — the brainy Belichick, as successful a coach as there will ever be, would fix it all. Not this time. The team deteriorated to the point where yesterday’s opening round home playoff loss to Tennessee was not that surprising. The youtube highlights of the game were most enjoyable. All this has brought into question the career of immensely talented WR Antonio Brown, sidelined by his boorishness. The Patriots released him, despite their need for speed. He must be the biggest jerk goin’. Anyway, the Super Bowl will be much more fun without Brady and Belichick. Is this the end of the dynasty? It sure looks like it. It seems time has finally caught up to Brady, arguably the best there ever was. Either that or he was not 100% physically. Perhaps the fact that he had less talent to work with was also a factor. It looks like the Bills, despite blowing yesterday’s game to the Texans, will mount a serious challenge to division supremacy next season, especially if QB Josh Allen improves his passing. I will be surprised if Brady goes to another team. I will not be if Belichick jumps ship. Both would be in high demand. Brady should make his wife happy and retire. He has nothing else to prove in the NFL. I wonder if Belichick would be happy not coaching. He seems a lifer.

The highlights of the Saints-Vikings game are already up at youtube. I’d picked New Orleans to go to the Super Bowl. Shows what I know. And who came up big in the end? The man writers constantly question despite the fact that he is infinitely better than a few QB’s who have won a Super Bowl — Kirk Cousins. Kudos.

It was a beautiful day to sell books on the street, provided one was out of the wind, which I was. The January doldrums are in effect. My thanks to the woman who did her usual weekend swap of books in Russian, and to the gentleman who did a swap and buy of same; and to the one who donated a bunch of audio books.
