Around the Horn
Here’s some good stuff from today’s NY Post, edited by yours truly: In an op-ed piece, Kyle Smith refutes the thesis of a recent paper by two college profs — Did John Stewart Elect Donald Trump? The contention of the pair is that the talk show host’s retirement led to a ratings drop and subsequent lack of interest in politics amongst its viewers, who didn’t show at the polls. Smith argues that the numbers are too small to have made a significant impact. He also suggests a title for Hillary’s next book: 7,573 Other Reasons I Lost That Weren’t My Fault, You Ungrateful Peasants. Kudos… An Argentine company has produced a new package for condoms in an effort to guarantee that sex is consensual. All four of its buttons must be pressed by the hands of the people looking to get down… Sales of Trump items have been soaring since the issue of the Mueller report. Here’s one:
Also in the Post: The painting below — Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes — is expected to fetch in the neighborhood of $100 million at auction, despite the fact that certain experts do not believe it is the work of the Italian master. “A mere bag’o shells,” as Ralph Kramden once said.
From Yahoo Sports: On Friday night there was one of those great quirks that occur in MLB, where 30 teams play 162 games each. Trailing 6–1 in the ninth, White Sox manager Rick Renteria, his bullpen taxed, sent 2B Jose Rendon out to the mound. Some of his pitches were so slow they didn’t register on the radar gun. He gave up two hits but no runs to the hard-hitting Red Sox.
I hate this kid. 14-year old Yang Kuang made the cut at the Volvo China Open, sinking a 15-foot putt for par on 18 to qualify. Awesome, whippersnapper. He’s the second youngest, by one month, to do it. “A pox on both your houses,” as Ed Norton once said.
As I was listening to one of the 50 or so CDs I’ve burned for the car, Dusty Springfield’s The Look of Love came up. For the first time I noticed the break, a beautiful, soft sax solo. I was curious who the musician was. Unfortunately, google failed to come up with a definitive answer, surprising these days. Many people are curious about it, asking the question at web forums. Speculation is that it is Ronnie Scott or Dennis Springer, UK sessionists. I hope this won’t be one of the questions on The $99,000 Answer. Ed Norton?
I resisted the temptation to open the floating book shop on this rainy day, even though the area under the scaffold at my usual nook wasn’t that wet. I feel like a shirker, a feeling that will last until I’m out there tomorrow.
