Autopilot

Will there be a more amusing headline in today’s news than this from newsmax.com?: “German Police Chase Tesla on Autopilot With Driver Sleeping.” Fodder for a comedy skit.

Wow — Quid Pro Joe actually told the truth at least once, headline from foxnews.com: “POKING FUN: Deleted Biden campaign ad slamming Buttigieg’s lack of experience resurfaces.” LOL

Last night I received an email from classmates.com encouraging me to reconnect with Jeffrey Epstein, who graduated in ’68, a year after me. Those alerts are generated randomly, by an algorithm, I’d guess. The owners of the site don’t know it’s that Jeffrey Epstein. There were more than 5000 kids in Lafayette H.S. at the time, the height of the baby boom. I doubt we ever met or spoke.

Today I received an email from westwoodbookspublishing.com offering a package for $699. I can do it for free at Amazon. I wonder how many writers go for something like this not knowing about the great option Jeff Bezos’ behemoth affords. The only thing that would make the fee worth it is the long shot that the book might break big. I learned that with my first two books, Close to the Edge and Adjustments, which are not likely to ever get out of the red. Most of the rest are in the black or close to it. I would be surprised if Vito’s Day or Inside Out will ever be profitable. The weak sales of the latter has surprised me. The former is as uncommercial as a work of fiction gets. Overall, I’m $282 ahead regarding my own books, despite the big hole I started with.

It was like early fall today, perfect for doing business curbside. Several people mentioned being overdressed. I peeled off a couple of layers. My thanks to the kind folks who donated, swapped and bought books. Here’s what sold: three kids books, Night by Elie Wiesel, the umpteenth copy I’ve sold through the years; Night Shift by Robin Cook; Louis C.K. and Philosophy: You Don’t Get to Be Bored, which contains the opinions of 25 philosophers, edited by Mark Ralkowski; The Consolation of Philosophy by Ancius Boethius; Women, Race & Class by Angela Y. Davis, felon, possible murderer; American Indian Myths & Legends by Richard & Alfonso Ortiz; the second proof of Coincidence by yours truly, to which I added a hand-written sentence on page 22; and this:
