I’ve always been fascinated by pop culture. Here are some 2019 facts on the subject, gleaned at various web sites:
Top Grossing Film: Avengers: Endgame, Domestic: $858 million, International: $2.80 billion. Haven’t seen it. I’ve hit the pause button on the superhero genre.
Highest paid actor: Robert Downey Jr., $66 million.
Biggest Hit Record: Old Town Road by Lil Nas X, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 consecutive weeks. Its overall run at number one is the longest in chart history. I listened to a minute of it this morning. I don’t think it’s for me.
Top selling album: Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent by Lewis Capaldi of Scotland. First I’ve heard of him.
The most frequent weekly fiction best seller of the year: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, 25 weeks at the top.
Top earning athlete: soccer superstar Lionel Messi of Argentina, $127 million.
Most watched TV show in the USA: NFL Sunday Night Football.
Most watched telecast: Super Bowl LIII, 98,820,000 viewers.
Most popular radio host: Rush Limbaugh, 15.5 million listeners; Sean Hannity second, 15 million.

Here are three great photos taken this year:

I’m not sure if this is from 2019, but here’s a great anonymous quote: “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.”

I know this shouldn’t annoy me in our dumbed-down culture, but it does. It was the same back in 2000 and 2010. The decade does not end on 12/31/’19. It will end on 12/31/’20. Stop with the Best of the Decade lists.

Lovin’ this mild weather, which makes the floating book shop a lot easier. My thanks to the woman who bought an exercise book, and to the Frenchman, who purchased William Faulkner’s brilliant As I Lay Dying, a novel whose imagery has stayed with me for decades; and to the gentleman who selected a book in Russian, and to the woman who chose five of said; and special thanks to the woman who arranged a meeting in the lobby at five PM, and who took home 15 books in Russian.
