From yesterday, excerpt from a nypost.com editorial: “China is building roughly two new coal-powered plants every week. But it is also the world leader in manufacturing hardware for wind and solar power and has achieved dominance in the electric-vehicle-battery market.”

Also from yesterday — Semper Fi, headline from foxnews.com: “Marines to meet recruiting goal this year while other military branches fall short.”

Headline from nypost.com: “Chuck Schumer is AWOL on NYC’s ever-growing migrant crisis.” Whenever the going gets tough, Chuckles is nowhere to be found.

Liberal politics in a nutshell, from NYP: “Even with fewer kids in NYC schools, spending keeps rising.”

Marine 1st Lt. Harvey “Barney” Barnum received the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam. A new Navy ship was christened in his name, his wife doing the honors with a bottle of champagne. Photo from Google Images:

RIP Paul Reubens, born Reubenfeld, aka Peewee Herman, 70, who succumbed to cancer. Born in upstate New York, he grew up in Florida. He moved to California and gained experience with small roles in theater, standup and in the improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings, which included Conan O’Brien, Lisa Kudrow, the late Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz and Julia Sweeney. The Pee-Wee Herman Show (1981) ran for five sellout months at the L.A.’s Roxy nightclub. HBO aired it as a special. His career spanned 1968–2021. There are 121 titles under his name at IMDb. He broke big with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), which has several funny scene, especially in the biker bar: “I’m trying to use the phone!” That led to Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which shot 45 episodes. He took a big hit in 1991 when he was accused of misbehavior in a porn theater. He rebounded almost immediately, playing the Penguin’s father in Batman Returns (1992). Other notable big screen roles: a voice over in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Matilda (1996), Blow (2001). He made many guest appearances on popular TV fare, including Gotham, The Blacklist, Murphy Brown, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. He also did several video games and worked a couple of brief stints in pro wrestling. He has numerous writing credits, most featuring his iconic character. He directed 32 episodes of his show and two TV movies involving Pee-wee. Well done, Sir. Thank you. Photo from GI:

Love this Bob Gorrell cartoon:

Just short of hot but low humidity today at the floating book shop. My thanks to the lovely young woman who overcompensated me for I Can If I Want To by Arnold Lazarus and Allen Fay, and to The Frenchman, who purchased a compilation of the works of Edgar Allan Poe and several classical CDs; and to Wolf, who bought two Russian DVDs, Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell and Map of Bones by James Rollins; and to Andu, who selected Matilda by Roald Dahl and two paperbacks on welding; and to the three kind folks who donated seven books between them.
