Bits n Pieces

Headline from nypost.com: “Don’t blame insurers’ greed — government wrecked our health care.” Agree.

It’s Santanegger! Photo from Google Images:

Amusing NYP headline: “Dear Abby: My rekindled relationship with my ex-fiance has turned into a situtationship.” Another clever new term.

Looks like Assad may join the likes of Hitler, Mao and Stalin. From NYP: “Historic atrocity: Syrian mass grave is largest uncovered since Stalin era as 100,000 bodies were discarded outside Damascus.”

From NYP: “Ozy Media founder sentenced to nearly 10 years for defrauding investors.” Another pardon from Quid Pro Joe?

I’ll say it again — this country has a mental health crisis. And this headline from newsmax.com seems to attest to it: “Emerson Poll: 41 Percent of Young Voters OK With United CEO Killing.”

From NM: “Elite Colleges Accused of Favoring Wealthy in Admissions.” No — ya think?

Need a job? Headline from foxnews.com: “Oscar Mayer’s ‘Wienermobile’ is hiring new drivers.” Photo from Google Images:

Last night the Grit channel, 31–3 on OTA in NYC, ran a western I’d never heard of, Forsaken (2015). It’s a standard story of landgrabbers vs. a gunman trying to go straight, distinguished by the powerful performances of Kiefer and Donald Sutherland as estranged father and son. I also enjoyed Michael Wincott’s take on a dapper, principled gunslinger. Brian Cox is the evil usurper, a part that fits perfectly with most of his career. Demi Moore is solid as the woman who got away.

The incoming was way more than the outgoing today at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. My thanks to the donors, and to the gentleman who bought a large kids’ book in Russian; and to the woman who purchased two hardcovers in that language; and to Lynn, who took home The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, translated from Czech. And from Prague, a tradition since 1847: 46 gas lanterns are manually lit daily during advent. Photo by Martin Divíšek/EPA, posted at theguardian.com:
