Bits n Pieces

Headline from nypost.com: “US citizens crossing border in record numbers — to live in Mexico: report.” The cost of living, especially housing, is lower in Narcoland.

This sounds like good news, headline from NYP: “Sears out of bankruptcy with a handful of stores left. “I always liked the store and shopped at it in my days in Michigan as well as in the one in the Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn.

NYP headline: “Why are progressives silent on violence against women? Because it hurts their pro-criminal agenda.” Doesn’t fit the narrative.

Headline from newsmax.com: “Serbia ‘In Hurry’ to Cut Russian Energy, Draw Closer to E.U.” Kudos.

Also from NM, government in a nutshell: “Feds Paid Room Service, Laundry, for Illegals in Hotels.”

It looks like Trump will be running. Before endorsing his potential rival for the White House for the Florida governor’s race, the former president zinged him, dubbing him: “Ron DeSanctimonious.” I am torn about his running again, even though I believe he’s the best man for the job, and even though the mainstream media would be no less hostile to DeSantis. But things would probably be less crazy, at least in the political sphere. I don’t expect any less overall insanity in America or throughout the world in the foreseeable future.

Headline from foxnews.com: “White House warns elections results may not be clear until ‘a few days’ after election.” Gee, I wonder why. Could it have something to do with early voting ballots?

Love this FN headline: “Man knocks himself out trying to flee store with luxury stolen goods.” Karma, Kramer. According to the article by Stephen Sorace, the thief ran into a plate glass window. If only all robberies ended similarly. Remember when criminals never got away with their crimes on TV shows and in the movies? That changed about 1970. I don’t object to it, as it is a more accurate portrayal of reality. I googled it and the articles on the first page were all over the place, as high as 50% and low as 2% solved. Several seemed to be making a political point.

RIP NHL stalwart Peter McNabb, 70, who succumbed to cancer. His career spanned 1973-’87. Born in Vancouver, his family moved to San Diego when he was 14. He earned a baseball scholarship to the University of Denver, then switched to hockey. He was one of the first college players to succeed in the NHL. A center, he played for four teams: the Sabres, Bruins, Canucks and Devils. His greatest success came in Boston, where he scored at least 35 goals in six straight seasons. Overall, he scored 363 goals. When his playing career ended, he did analysis for TV, working until the 2021 season. Well done, sir.

I’m more than 40 handwritten pages into Coincidence, my latest novel or novella, I’m not sure which. That sum would probably span 50+ book pages. I have a tendency to cut to the chase, especially in terms of action, so I doubt I’ll reach 150 pages, let alone 200. Would that be enough for a simple thriller? Class of ’67 was half thriller, half black comedy of aging. Coincidence is 99% fiction. Once the first draft is finished, most of the additions will probably be in the characters’ backgrounds. Long way to go.

An experiment at today’s session of the floating book shop looked like a complete failure until I began packing up. With parking unavailable at my usual nook, I settled in the brilliant sunshine at the corner of Avenue U and West 8th. My thanks to the gentleman who made the toil worth it, saved me from having to rationalize “At least it was a beautiful day.” He went the classics route plus one, buying three by Shakespeare: Hamlet, Othello and a collection of the sonnets; David Copperfield by Charles Dickens; The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway; and this, which may come in handy tomorrow:
