Blast Off
Events around the country almost have me wishing I was aboard SpaceX.

Finally — a Democrat who makes sense. In his op-ed piece at nypost.com, Kyle Smith quotes Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms: “I’ve always said, and I will always continue to say, that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating . . . violence will only create more social problems than they will solve.” She should receive consideration for VP — or president, given the Dems’ ludicrous field. Hey, Obama came out of nowhere to do it, why not Bottoms? This is not an endorsement. I’d be surprised if Bottoms and I are not in complete disagreement on issues across the board.
I hadn’t thought of any additions to my novella in progress for two days. On my morning walk three came to me. Two fit the thriller part of the narrative, the other the life at 70 half. I’d forgotten to include a line about floaters, those dark squiggly lines and dots that crop up in the vision of many seniors.
The business I miss most during the pandemic is the Chinese Bakery on Sheepshead Bay Road, a five-minute walk from my door, which I hit two or three times a week. I sense it will not reopen. Since I was at the old house today and had to visit the ATM, I thought I’d check out the long stretch on 86th Street between 23rd Avenue and Bay Parkway to see if there were a Chinese Bakery. Sure enough there is— and it had hotdog buns, which I hadn’t had since April, and they were the same price, $1.25 each. That made it an especially good day. Ah — the simple pleasures.
Since I don’t dare reopen the book shop yet, I’ve been filling time on the weekend by cleaning out the basement of the old house. Although it’s a colossal mess, there are items that would be valuable to many. I’ve put several storage racks beside the garbage cans, and they’ve all been taken. I also put goodies in a plastic storage box and leave it where it will be easily spotted. The first load disappeared rather quickly. The second has not yet attracted anyone. Even though I’ve cleared away a lot of stuff, I doubt I’m even halfway. Here’s the way I left the front portion today:
