Brain Matters
I think I know what podcasts are, although I’ve never listened to one. There’s a new wrinkle to them, according to an article at nypost.com: Audio porn, a new genre of X-rated erotic recordings that’s generating a lot of buzz. This is only slightly more appealing to me than audio books, and a far cry from what’s available visually — and free — on PC’s everywhere. Here’s an image from the memorable Seinfeld episode guest-starring Tawny Kitaen in which Jerry’s sexual and logical side debate his lust for a woman he can’t stand.
And here’s the reason for the conundrum:
Fascinating news on the medical front, also from NYP: Scans from six patients reveal how people are still able to function fully without half a brain. Each had one a hemisphere removed during childhood to reduce severe epileptic seizures. Researchers found normal global connectivity — and stronger connections between different networks. In a way this isn’t surprising. As kids we we believed a human uses only a fraction of his brain. It seems that isn’t a myth.
Here’s something to warm the hearts of fellow political cynics, from foxnews.com: A campaign event for former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who launched a late Democratic presidential bid last week, reportedly was canceled Wednesday evening when only two people showed up. He was scheduled to speak at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
I hit a snag in crafting a cover for the novel I intend to self-publish soon. Amazon allows users a wide variety of images. One of the Statue of Liberty seemed perfect, as the action takes place in NYC and because Lady Liberty is a perfect symbol for the freedom of thought the book is about in part. Unfortunately, that particular template, for some bizarre reason, didn’t allow a spot for the title. There was another that halved the image and provided a space for the title, but the background was an unsightly pink and unchangeable. This morning it occurred to me that there might be a program on my new PC that would allow me to graft the title onto the image. Sure enough, the Paint with 3D option affords pasting. After several misfires, I was successful. There’s only one problem — the text is too small. I will return to it later. If it looks okay, I’ll try to upload it to the new book’s work space at Amazon. Here’s what it looks like at the moment:
The weather was infinitely better than yesterday. I did not have to retreat to my car at all. My thanks to the lovely young Latina who bought A Hitch in Twilight, and to Marie, who purchased Pure Cane Road by James Lee Burke; and to the woman who selected a thick tome in Russian; and to the young mom who did a swap of kids’ books.
