Bronx Born & More
RIP Bronx-born Vin Scully, 94, voice of the Dodgers for 67 years, always a class act. He grew up in Washington Heights in Manhattan and graduated from Fordham University. He called 28 World Series, 20 no-hitters, four perfect games and Hank Aaron’s 715th home run. Along the way he also covered the NFL, tennis and golf. He was a father of five. Two wives preceded him in death. Here’s how he signed off of his last broadcast in 2016: “You and I have been friends for a long time, but I know in my heart that I’ve always needed you more than you’ve ever needed me, and I’ll miss our time together more than I can say. But you know what? There will be a new day and eventually a new year. And when the upcoming winter gives way to spring, rest assured, once again it will be ‘Time for Dodger baseball.’ So this is Vin Scully wishing you a very pleasant good afternoon, wherever you may be.” Thank you, sir. I hope this newsmax.com headline isn’t as ominous as it sounds: “Report: Total Household Debt Hits Record $16T.”
Headline from foxnews.com: “Pennsylvania teen saves neighbors trapped in apartment fire with trampoline.” He lived in the building himself and escaped by jumping out a window. He and a friend moved the thing into place. 18 people got out, only minor injuries reported. Kudos, kid.
Several sources have reported that Batgirl, whose budget was $90 million, will not be released on any platform. Will it affect the film career of the lovely Bronx-born Leslie Grace (Martinez), 27? She has ten other credits at IMDb, all music-related but In the Heights (2021), an adaptation of the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame. She has had two singles crack the top ten on the Latin chart, covers of The Shirelles’ Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Carole King) and The Ronettes’ Be My Baby (Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector) in which incorporates Spanish lyrics. Buena suerte, signorita. Photo from GI:
It was hot, not humid. My thanks to Thirsty Dave, lead singer of country swing band Western Caravan, who donated a number of large paperbacks, and to my constant benefactress, who delivered two works of non-fiction; and to Wolf, who bought a special Life magazine devoted to Sherlock Holmes and five DVDs in Russian; and to the gentleman who purchased five hardcovers in Russian; and to the woman who opted for one; and to young Jason, who chose FutureThink by Edie Weiner and Arnold Brown; and to the woman who came along while I was packing up and selected The End of October by Lawrence Wright and a collection of Native American Poetry.
