Business as Unusual

Excerpt from a article concerning the closing of a store in Portland, Oregon, and the sign owners put in the window. By Emma Colton, originally published at, edited by yours truly: “Our city is in peril. Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business, in our city’s current state. We have no protection, or recourse, against the criminal behavior that goes unpunished. Do not be fooled into thinking that insurance companies cover losses. We have sustained 15 break-ins … we have not received any financial reimbursement since the 3rd.” Photo from Google Images:

There’s good news too, NYP headline: “In-store Black Friday shopping jumps, online records set.” Inflation be damned.

Amusing NYP headline: “Seal conservation efforts aided by new facial recognition technology.” The device must really be good if it can tell them apart.

Fascinating development in China regarding Covid lockdowns. Headline from “Blank Sheets of Paper Become Symbol of Defiance in China Protests.” Photo from GI:

NM headline: “Khamenei’s Niece Arrested After Plea for Foreign Governments to Cut Ties with Iran.” Could a miracle occur in that unfortunate country? Wishful thinking, I suppose.

Also from NM: “GOP Oversight to Investigate ‘Waste, Fraud, Abuse’ After Gaining House Control.” How many times have we heard something similar? I’ll believe something will be done when I see it.

The harsh wind took the enjoyment out of today’s session of the floating book shop. At least it wasn’t cold. My thanks to The Quiet Man, who bought two Christmas CD’s, and to the two ladies who combined to donate five books.
