Carried Away

Here’s what stands out today at nypost.com: Bill Clinton has made a pre-emptive strike to avoid scandal, using the Sergeant Schultz defense of ‘60’s TV sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, claiming he “knows nothing” about Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sex crimes. It didn’t occur to me yesterday that the affair may be another way of attacking the president, who claims he hasn’t spoken to the accused in 15 years. Current Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, U.S. attorney in Miami back in 2008, has drawn Nancy Pelosi’s fire. He helped secure a plea deal that resulted in an 18-month sentence for Epstein, who served only 13 months. How dare he do his job… Home Depot shoppers are threatening a boycott over its Trump-supporting co-founder. It will be interesting to see if sales are affected.

A couple of months ago on Sean Hannity’s radio show, Newt Gingrich predicted Kamala Harris would win the nomination for president. That’s looking prescient. Harris would have a perfect campaign slogan: “I did it the old fashion way.” It will be a surprise if the mainstream media doesn’t ignore the fact that she had sex with her boss to advance her career. It doesn’t fit the agenda.

For the second straight year a Lithuanian couple won the World Wife-Carrying Championship held in the Finnish town of Sonkajarvi. They covered the 278 yard obstacle course in 1 minute 6.72 seconds, leaping over timber and running through waist high water. The prize? The wife’s weight in beer. The event, held since 1992, is inspired by a Finnish legend, Ronkainen the Robber. In the 19th century tale, a gang pillages villages and steals the women. The length of the course is said to be the distance needed to avoid being shot by pursuers. The 20th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2019, during Sunday River Resort’s annual Fall Festival Weekend in Newry, Maine. The prize for that is not only beer but five times the woman’s weight in cash.

My thanks to the kind folks who bought and donated books on this gorgeous summer day. Most of what sold involved cooking, a gentleman buying six and middle age women taking one each. Only one remains. A young woman pounced on The Help by Kathryn Stockett, another on a Cary Grant bio, which she was bringing to a patient at Coney Island Hospital; and another middle age woman opted for Night over Water by Ken Follett, and a gentleman chose The Return Journey: Stories by Maeve Binchy
