Inflation was up 5.3% in August compared to last year. Don’t complain, America — this is fairer.
NYC advocates are using a large spike in traffic deaths to call for stricter preventive measures. I’m sure driver recklessness is often to blame, but how often are accidents attributable to errors by bicyclists or pedestrians not paying attention or crossing against a traffic light?
More Covid division, headline from nypost.com: “Colorado hospital system denies organ transplants to unvaccinated patients.”
Wow! Here’s a promising innovation from California featured in an AP article at NYP — machines made for use at homes, offices, ranches and elsewhere that dehumidify the air and in doing so create water that’s filtered to make it drinkable. Of course there are downsides at present. Prices range from $30,000 to $200,000, and the devices consume an inordinate amount of energy, so they many be cost efficient only for those who have solar panels, if that. A hydrology researcher cautioned that it isn’t a solution for California’s broader water issues. She believes fighting global warming will do that. I ask her, since climate change is supposed to bring more storms, why the water from them isn’t being gathered and stored. Here’s one of the devices:
Great op-ed piece at NYP by Jonathan Podhoretz on the debt ceiling. Democrats are saying the economy will collapse if it is not raised. Guess what? In 2006, when Republicans were in control, Biden, Schumer and Obama all voted against raising it. Politics in a nutshell. Kudos, sir. Thank you… And now it looks like Republicans, as usual, will cave on the issue. It’s basically one-party rule of vote-buying spendaholics, folks.
Headline from newsmax.com: “UN Endorses World’s 1st Malaria Vaccine as ‘Historic Moment.’” Since the banning of DDT in 1972, the disease has killed or crippled millions.
Another good day for the floating book shop. My thanks to the woman who donated two paperbacks in Russian, and to the one who purchased seven hardcovers in that language; and to the elderly woman who bought a Brad Thor thriller; and to Lynn, who selected Fade by Yolanda Brown and Witch & Wizard by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet; and to Lou, who took home three more DVDs; and to the gentleman who chose a pictorial of the work of David Hamilton — in German. He was a British photographer and film director (five obscure movies) best known for pictures of young women and girls, mostly in the nude. Since he was accused of rape by four women, I won’t post any of his work, although the allegations, decades old, were never proven. He was found dead at 83 in 2016, apparently at his own hand.
