Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kenneth Cook bench-pressed 551 pounds competing in the 198–220-pound weight class. He weighed 218. The previous world record was 534. According to Guinness, in 2016 Ohio’s Blaine Sumner benched 885, the overall record. I don’t know how much he weighed at the time, but the page lists him at 385. Here’s the Sarge:
Sign of the times: The Washington Nationals will begin the National League Championship Series without their top reliever, closer Daniel Hudson, whose wife is having a baby.
My Friday night movie fix proved disappointing, as the DVD stopped playing after 16 minutes. I hoped a cleaning would get it going, but I noticed a slight bump. I tried to jump ahead to other chapters, but the player wouldn’t cooperate. The selection was The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot (2018). I probably would have passed on such a title if not for the presence of Sam Eliot, who is as photogenic as anyone in cinema history. He’s a good actor too, so natural before the camera. I’ve ordered a replacement disc. Given the flimsiness of the packaging, it’s surprising more don’t arrived damaged. It’s happened maybe five times out of a thousand. For anyone intrigued by the title, 6700+ users at IMDb have rated the flick, forging to a consensus of 5.6 on a scale of ten.
RIP Robert Forster, 79, who succumbed to cancer. Born in Rochester, NY, his mom was Italian. He earned a BA in Psychology at the University of Rochester. Although he began in theater, he had a long career in films and TV beginning in 1967 and stretching until this year. There are 186 titles under his name at IMDb. He made multiple appearances on many popular series such as Twin Peaks and Heroes. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Jackie Brown (1997). He often played someone in law enforcement. He gave voice in audio books to Carole Douglas Nelson’s Midnight Louie series, which is about a crime fighting Las Vegas tomcat. He was a member of the Triple Nine Society, those in the 99.9 IQ percentile. Here’s a quote attributed to him: “I’m not sure how a guy wins or loses in this business, but somebody’s got to come along and make you lucky. You can’t do it yourself.” Well done, sir. Thank you. Here he is in character in Jackie Brown:
My thanks to the gentleman who bought Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat, and to the woman who purchased two issues of Poetry magazine; and to the one who selected Rose Madder by Stephen King, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, and a kids’ books; and to the woman who chose three of the latter; and to the three gentlemen who combined to buy five books in Russian.
