Constants
Our national curse has struck again — three times in less than 24 hours. Efforts to politicize the events are underway. The left will blame President Trump for fomenting hatred. The right will cite anger brought about by advocates of open borders and sanctuary cities, and the marginalizing of young white males. The religious will point to America’s abandonment of faith. I don’t know the reasons or the answer. Maybe there is none in a free society of almost 328 million other than individuals are occasionally given to evil.
Jonathon M. Trugman had a nifty comment in his business column in today’s NY Post. Citing open borders, he said the left’s call for Medicare for All will lead to Medicare for the whole world.
In a short item, the Post reports that government officials in Dayton, Ohio are no longer hiring those who test positive for tobacco and nicotine, citing the health care costs attributed to smokers. Although certainly understandable, is it going too far? Is it legal? What about those who test positive only for marijuana?
Here’s a new book for fans of comics:
RIP Cliff Branch, 71, WR on three Raiders Super Bowl Champions. He was found dead in a hotel room, presumably of natural causes. He caught 501 passes and scored 67 TD’s. He led the league in receiving yards in ’74, and in TD receptions in ’74 and ’76. Surprisingly, he’s not in the NFL Hall of Fame. Well done, sir.
My thanks to the gentleman who reminds me of Nikita Khrushchev, who bought two thrillers in Russian, and to the elderly woman who did a two-for-two swap of the same; and to the woman who bought Patricia Cornwell’s Red Mist, the 19th entry in her Kay Scarpetta series.
