Corona, Glenn, Doug & Mike
Here’s an amusing headline from nypost.com: “Nervous men freezing sperm over coronavirus fears.” And another that seems positive on the surface: “Starving rats are resorting to war and cannibalism to survive.” Since many restaurants are not open, the vermin may begin invading homes looking for food. This behavior is not to be confused with DC swamp rats — or maybe it is… Here’s a sobering headline from foxnews.com: “US gives 10 times the amount of money to WHO than China.” And yet the organization does China’s bidding… Why would any be surprised by this? It’s just more of the maddening shenanigans of politics.
RIP Glenn Beckert, 79, who spent nine seasons as the Cubs’ starting second baseman, and two with the Padres to finish out his career. A second-baseman, he was a slick fielder who won a Gold Glove in 1968. The four-time all-star had a lifetime BA of .283, and rarely struck out. In 1968 he led all of MLB in runs scored, 98. In 1971 he batted an astonishing .342, third in the NL. He is an inductee in the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. Well done, sir.
RIP Doug Sanders, 86, winner of 20 PGA tour events, a great career despite the lack of a victory in a major. He was a four-time runner up in the big shows, including the heartbreaking 1970 British Open when he four-putted the 18th hole, fell into a tie with Jack Nicklaus, and lost in an 18-hole playoff the next day. His colorful outfits earned him the moniker “Peacock of the Fairways.” He came a long way from his roots in a poor Georgia family. He picked cotton as a teenager. He taught himself the game. Awesome, sir. Why isn’t he a member of the PGA or World Golf Hall of Fame?
The first two drafts of a novel are so absorbing, peak creativity. I’m halfway through the second of the thriller I’m giving a shot, and each day I am eager to get to it. Not only is it filling time during the virus self isolation, its helping my sanity. How ironic — writing about a psychopath is keeping me sane.
I went out for some air at noon and heard someone calling from the opposite side of Avenue Z. It was Mike. I assumed he had crossword puzzles for me. To my surprise, he’d brought books just in case he ran into me. My thanks. Here he is in full Corona garb:
I took only a glance at the books and left them in my car just in case the virus had attached itself to any or all of them. I’ll let them sit for a few days before I take a closer look. Such is life at present. I don’t see opening the book shop until the entire city is back to work, and heaven knows when that may be.
