Cowboys & More

RIP NFL RB Duane Thomas, 77. Born in Dallas, he teamed with RB Mercury Morris at West Texas St. to run roughshod through opposing defenses. The Cowboys selected him in the first round of the 1970 draft, the 23rd pick overall. Although he did not start until the fifth game, he was named Rookie of the Year, rushing for 803 yards, second in the league. He was the first rookie with two 100-yard rushing playoff games, but Dallas lost Super Bowl V to the Colts. In ’71 Thomas led the league in TDs, 13, and was a big factor in Super VI, rushing for 95 yards, scoring a TD in the victory over the Dolphins. From there his career went downhill. He was his own worst enemy, a diva, a mystery. He was traded and subsequently bounced around to several teams without impact. He played in only 49 games. I was unable to find any info on family life. Headline from nypost.com concerning White Castle: “Fast food favorite wooing financially strapped customers with eye-popping menu prices.” Kudos. I wish there were one in our neighborhood.
Among today’s many celebrations, it’s Purple Heart Day. Thanks to anyone who ever earned one. Photo from GI:
Last night the Outlaw channel, 48–4 on OTA in NYC, ran Blood on the Moon (1948), starring Robert Mitchum and Robert Preston. Although a standard story, it had more psychological depth than most westerns. While researching the cast at IMDb, I discovered another Hollywood stalwart, Bud Osbourne, who has 636 titles under his name in a career spanning 1912-’63. That moves him into sixth place on my unofficial list of most appearances. Bess Flowers had/has 930, 200+ more than anyone else I’ve found. Osbourne stumbled into the business because of his skill with horses. A father of two, he succumbed to a heart attack at 79 in ’64. Photo from GI:
Still running into only Kamala Harris pop-up ads on youtube.
Headline from foxnews.com: “Taylor Swift concert terror plot foiled as police in Austria arrest 2 suspects.” Kudos.
RIP actress Patti Yasutake, 70, who succumbed to cancer. Born in L.A., she earned a degree in theater from UCLA. There are 62 credits under her name at IMDb, career spanning 1985–2024. Most of her work came in TV, including 16 episodes of Star Trek: Next Generation, playing Dr. Crusher’s assistant. On the big screen she appeared in Star Trek: Generations (1994) and Star Trek: First Contact (1996). She was also in nine episodes of Scarecrow and Mrs. King, seven of Beef, and she did many guest shots on popular primetime fare. Here’s a quote attributed to her regarding her role in the iconic franchise: “Well, it’s going to keep me young forever! When I’m long gone, people will still be watching old episodes. There’s a part of my vanity that thinks, ‘Hey, that’s pretty cool.’” Yes, it is. I was unable to find any info on family. Well done, Madam. Thank you. Photo from GI:
Although it was only sprinkling in our area, I decided not to set up the Anti-inflation Book Shop under the nearby viaduct, which was probably a mistake because the forecast is for rain the next two days. Instead I took on two chores: laundry and the dismantling of the futon I’ve had for circa 30 years. I’ll do the building’s hard-working crew a favor and bring it down to the trash area piece by piece. I’m keeping the mattress, which I’ve placed beneath the sleeping pod I purchased months ago.
