RIP Randy Meisner, 77, founding member of the Eagles, taken by complications associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Born on a farm in Nebraska, he was inspired by an Elvis Presley appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and later by Motown’s great musicians. He played in a local band and others, including Poco and Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band, and also did session work for James Taylor, Waylon Jennings and Linda Ronstadt, the latter responsible for his meeting Don Henley, Glen Frey and Bernie Leadon, co-founders of what would become the legendary group in 1971. While he usually played the bass and sang backing vocals, he wrote, co-wrote, and/or sang lead on each of the group’s first five albums, most notably Take It to the Limit, its first million-selling single. He stayed until late ’77 when exhaustion and bickering got to him. He later released three solo albums and one as a member of Meisner, Swan & Rich. Three songs cracked the Billboard top 30. He was present at the induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. His last public performance was in 2008. Like so many artists, he struggled with substance abuse, which led to health issues. Married twice, he was a father of three. Facts from Wiki, photo from Google Images:

I’ve always been fascinated that people, even the obese, smoke in such heat. I can hardly believe I was jogging in it into my 40’s. Kudos to those I see jogging in it these days.
Although I believe the companies depicted in the Gary Varvel cartoon below will continue to prosper, I think it’s funny:
The floating book shop has rarely had success at a nearby viaduct, but it was the only sane option on this blazing hot day. I was in the shade the entire time and a breeze was blowing along Avenue Y, so it was quite pleasant. Unfortunately, typically, there were only a few browsers and no buyers. Still, it was better than staying home. And if the forecast’s right, only one more day of extreme nonsense.
