Crazy World

How I hate that the suspect in the healthcare exec’s murder is Italian-American. Headline from foxnews.com: “Police department receiving threats after arrest of CEO murder suspect.” I wonder exactly how many Americans believe the dweeb is a hero? I think most folks would agree that killing is sometimes justified, the most obvious example Nazis. But in this case? It’s something I try to get at in my novel Killing.

Karma. Headline from newsmax.com: “‘Defund Police’ Activist Begs Cops to Find Stolen Stuff.” Sta freesk, as my parents might have said. Although it translates to “stay cold,” it means like something Brooklyn kids would have said back in the day: “Tough noogies.”

Recently, an old hardcover copy of The Spoilers by Rex Beach came my way via a donation to the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. The jacket is MIA, it has a tear at the bottom of the spine and the pages are a bit loose. It meets my reading criteria: an author I’ve never read, in the neighborhood of 350 pages. Its copyright is 1902 and he dedicated it to his mom. I don’t believe it’s a first edition. The highest price I spotted for it on the web is $275. Last night I noticed a fading inscription just inside the front cover, a blank page. I find it touching, making it priceless:
“To Eileen and Benny
Christmas 1942
From Fred and Rosalie.”

I break my pro sports silence for this clever comment by a trading floor alum commenting on Juan Soto’s $700 million-plus contract. “Welcome to the hundred-dollar hot dog.” LOL. Kudos, Frankie. No sports franchise will get a dime out of me.

A surprising return at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop on this raw, clammy day, proving once again that weather is almost never a factor regarding curbside business. My thanks to the gentleman who, as usual, overcompensated me for his haul: Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Shakespeare’s Othello and The Creators: A History of Heroes of the Imagination by Daniel J. Boorstin; and to the Latino restaurant worker who took home seven more DVDs; and to the two ladies who combined to buy four pieces of costume jewelry; and to the one who purchased this gem:
