Crazy World
Here’s an interesting headline from nypost.com: “These men love their sex doll wives because they won’t cheat.”
And the insanity continues, from a headline at foxnews.com: “Ellen DeGeneres stands up to Twitter mob, defends appearing with ‘friend’ George W. Bush.” They were seated beside each other in the press-box at the Cowboys’ game.
Here’s a WTF? if there ever was one, from FN, edited by yours truly: A German career criminal convicted of three bank robberies gave a 20-hour-long statement at his sentencing before finally being stopped by the judge. It included anecdotes about his fitness routine and accounts of his crimes. Even a writer wouldn’t stretch credulity that far. Why wasn’t he stopped after a few minutes? Sometimes “the law is an ass” as was first said in the play Revenge for Honour by the English dramatist George Chapman in 1654, and also used by Charles Dickens in Oliver Twist.
Elizabeth Warren is quite the character. She is claiming to have been fired from a teaching job years ago because she was pregnant. Maybe she was working in the Soviet Union or Mao’s China at the time. It wouldn’t surprise me if Hillary is drafted to run again.
NFL: It looks like the Patriots will not have much trouble reaching another Super Bowl… The Chiefs are not the only team whose run defense is porous. It seems half the league has that problem… It’s looking like the Jets would be winless even if QB Sam Darnold hadn’t come down with mono… The most impressive team during the weekend was the 49ers, who made mincemeat of the Browns and QB Baker Mayfield. TE George Kittle is as impressive as the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce… The most surprising outcome was the Raiders beating the Bears, who were a missed short field goal from the NFC title game last season… RB Christian McCaffery of the Panthers is as impressive as any player in the league… Will the Bengals win a game this season? They look like they’re headed for the number one pick, although the Redskins may give them a run for their money… The Giants are not a contender… The Cowboys were not ready to play… Right now it looks like the Saints are the class of the NFC, despite the absence of QB Drew Brees. What a performance by his sub, Teddy Bridgewater. Kudos… The Seahawks’ grit is admirable, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them come back to earth…
Why do I feel as if I’m doing wrong whenever the floating book shop is successful? Why do I feel undeserving? I give people great deals, never overcharge, and often sense certain customers believe I’m a fool for not charging more. 69 years old, and I’m hauling heavy crates. Why do I feel as if I’m getting away with something? Paging Dr. Freud. My thanks to the kind folks who made purchases. All the pictorials that were donated yesterday have sold. The box of childrens’ books needs to be replenished. Three sales were especially gratifying. Months ago a gentleman asked for Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. A hardcover copy was part of yesterday’s haul. He was impressed that I remembered. I’d reminded myself each time he passed… I asked Barry if he had enough Kerouac. “You can never have enough,” he replied, and purchased The Unknown Kerouac… Last but not least, actor/singer JVS bought Present and Past, whose main character is a struggling actor. I am humbled by the patronage of these kind folks.
