RIP Mac Davis, 78, actor, singer, songwriter. Born in Texas, he got his start as an employee of Nancy Sinatra, playing on her records and in her stage shows. His Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me hit the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1972. Stop and Smell the Roses hit #9 in ’74. 30 of his singles charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs. He cut 19 studio albums. Many of his songs were recorded by other artists: In the Ghetto, Memories, Daddy, Don’t Cry and A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley; I Believe in Music has been covered by 44 artists; Something’s Burning by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition and 17 other acts. His work earned him a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He hosted 32 episodes of an eponymous NBC variety show from ‘74-’76. There are 35 titles under his name as Actor at IMDb, and 119 under Soundtrack, where his songs were used in film and TV. Here’s a quote attributed to him: “One of my real goals was to hear someone whistling a song I’d written.” Well done, sir. Thank you.

Headline from nypost.com: “Montana sex shop giving away vibrators to women who vote.” Cast your ballot, then go home and have some fun. Batteries not included.

Sean Hannity has three pollsters on his radio show periodically. Today one said that among those who will vote at the polls on Election Day, Trump leads overwhelmingly, but among those who will vote by mail Biden leads by 51%. He also leads among the early voters. The only hopeful news on this front is that in post debate polls conducted by Telemundo (66–34%) and CSPAN (53–29%) respondents believe Trump won. As I’ve said many times, I expect America to eventually become a Socialist country. We’ve been trending that way since FDR. The Dems have chosen to go all in on this in 2020 and it seems they will get what they want a lot sooner than I’d hoped. Trump is the only figure of consequence to fight the trend. Pre-Corona, he had been wildly successful in his first term, but it looks like he won’t get a second. His supporters will have to hope that the American brand of socialism will be benign, much better than that of Venezuela. How I hope I’m wrong in my beliefs and fears.

Only one customer today at the floating book shop, but it was a good one. My thanks to Johnny Boy, who bought Obsession Falls by Christina Dodd, Storm of the Century by Stephen King, the second and third entries in the Frankenstein trilogy by Dean Koontz, On the Street Where You Live by Mary Higgins Clark, Play Dirty by Sandra Brown, and Class of ’67 by yours truly. John, who seems is his 40’s, developed his love of reading when as a kid he was grounded for three months and discovered a bunch of books in a closet. I resisted the temptation to ask why he was grounded… Another positive of today’s session was the appearance of a woman, who must now be in her 90’s, whom I’d feared I’d never see again. For the first time she was in the company of a home attendant.
