Darwin’s Children
The Darwin Awards honor those who risk life and limb in the dumbest ways possible. Unfortunately, many of those cited died, taking the fun out of it. Here’s one who lived: While working in a lab, a scientist was bothered by a wasp nest. He hit upon the idea of using a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner to get rid of it. Safely in the device, he wondered how he might kill the pests and decided to spray Raid insecticide down the nozzle. It ignited, burning off his facial hair and bursting open the dust bag, releasing the insects. He suffered numerous bites. Understandably, the wasps must have been upset. It’s comforting to know the highly educated are capable of the same stupidity as the rest of us.
This person may qualify for this year’s Darwin awards. Keep your seat in an upright position and enjoy your flight:
From foxnews.com, another candidate for a Darwin: Newly elected San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was raised by Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, former leaders of the Weather Underground domestic terror group. He also worked for the late socialist president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. Great job there, guy… And another candidate, also in California, a UC Berkeley philosophy prof who had this to say: “I unironically embrace the bashing of rural Americans. They, as a group, are bad people who have made bad life decisions…and we should shame people who aren’t pro-city… they should have higher health care costs, pay more in taxes and be forced to live an uncomfortable life for rejecting efficient city life.” Sadly, if he ran for congress, he’d probably be elected in a landslide.
I’m trying to find a party track by a female artist I heard on Lite FM, at least I think it’s a woman. I’m not sure how old it is. The web playlist only has its most popular or recent songs. I finally found out who does the catchy Feel It Still — Portugal the Man, an American band out of Alaska. I thought the singer was female. Not! Here’s the group:
As for the Darwin candidate who runs the floating book shop — no wind, plenty of sunshine made for a pleasant stay at my regular nook. Unfortunately, only one person was interested. My thanks to the woman who bought a Jacques Pepin cook book, and to my constant benefactress, who donated a number of non-fiction titles; and to everyone who stopped to chat.
