RIP Anita Pointer, 74. Born in Oakland, the fourth of six children, she formed The Pointer Sisters in 1969 with younger siblings Bonnie and June. She co-wrote many of their songs. In 1973 Yes We Can Can reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. In ’75 they had a crossover hit with Fairytale, which won a Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group, and a nomination for Best Country Song. The trio continued to soar, recording Fire, which hit #2 in ’79; He’s So Shy, #3 in ’80; Slow Hand, #2 in ’81; Jump, #3 in ’84; a remix of I’m So Excited, #9 in 84, and Neutron Dance, #6 in ’84. In ’83 the album Break Out reached multi-platinum status and won the group two more Grammys. In 1986 Anita’s duet with Earl Thomas Conley, Too Many Times, reached #2 on the country chart. Well done, madam. Thank you.

More PC insanity, headline from nypost.com: “Job applicants told to remove college names from resumes to promote ‘equitable’ hiring.” And in the same vein, headline from newsmax.com: “Time Mocked for Article on Exercise’s Roots in White Supremacy.”

Science was my worst school subject, so maybe my questioning the danger of the following is naive or even dumb. Headline from foxnews.com: “NASA chief warns China could claim new territory on the moon.”

Excerpt from an FN article by David Asman: “Our national debt is massive — at $31 trillion it’s now bigger than our annual GDP.” And yet the financial collapse expected to be triggered by debt/deficit never occurs. Has the tipping point finally been reached? If it does occur, politicians could cite Covid lockdowns and the bailouts that followed as the reason, which would be partially true. Then again, my grasp of economics is only a little better than my grasp of science.

Another balmy day, perfect for doing business curbside. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a hardcover in Russian, and to Mr. Conspiracy, aka Steve, who hauled home the massive John Adams bio by David McCullough; and to the young man who purchased The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Toy Story 1 & 2 — on VHS!
