Dino, Louis & More
RIP Dino Danelli, 78, drummer for ‘60’s pop/rock powerhouse The Rascals. Born in Jersey, he co-founded the group in 1965, and provided the beat through nine albums. Good Lovin’, Groovin’ and People Got to Be Free all hit #1, A Beautiful Morning and How Can I Be Sure rose to #3 and #4 respectively, A Girl Like You #10. The group will carry a special place in my heart to the grave. Good Lovin’ was released in early 1966, my senior season on Lafayette High School’s football team. To a teammate’s ear, the Good Lovin’ chant/roar sounded like “Tearlos.” While doing laps, he would cry “Tearlos” and the rest of us would reply “Huh-ho.” Our coaches thought it was “Cheerio.” Thank you, Mr. Danelli. Well done, goombah.
RIP basketball icon Louis Orr, 64. Born in Cincinnati, he had long runs as both a player and coach. At Syracuse he averaged nearly 13 PPG and 7.6 RPG. The team made the field of 64 in all four of his seasons. He was named to the All Big East squad in 1980. He was the 29th pick in the 1980 NBA draft, selected by Indiana in the second round. He played two seasons for the Pacers. His final six seasons were spent with the Knicks. As a pro he averaged nearly ten PPG and four RPG. After his playing days, he served as an assistant coach from 1991–2000, then was the head man at Siena, Seton Hall and Bowling Green, record 201–201. He was named Coach of the Year once at each of those schools. He ended his career on the sidelines with a five-year stint as ex-teammate Patrick Ewing’s assistant at Georgetown. Well done, Sir.
It’s never easy predicting financial markets. Yesterday’s Dow drop of 754 points seemed particularly odd. It’s not as if the Fed’s latest interest rate hike was unexpected. It was even less than its previous few, 50 basis points instead of 75. All the other major indexes followed suit. The DJIA dropped another 281 points today. What’s next? I have no idea.
Decisions, decisions — headline from foxnews.com: “Trove of emails tied to Hunter Biden will be released — unless White House acts.” I’ll be surprised if Quid Pro Joe doesn’t put the kibosh on them and hope the mainstream media will remain friendly and suppress them. Here’s a Gary Varvel cartoon on the subject:
Interesting development in the California, headline from FN: “State’s fifth-largest county votes to take closer look into potential secession.” Recall that the same is happening in eastern Oregon, which wishes to become part of Idaho. I’ll be surprised if anything comes of these movements.
The floating book shop was rained out today, which allowed me time to complete round six on my latest work of fiction, Coincidence, a novella. It’s 23,700 words, about an hour read. It looks like I will have to lease Microsoft Word for at least a month, as I haven’t found a way to open/place the Google Doc on my desktop. I doubt Amazon allows an upload directly from it. I’ll find out when I begin working to bring the book to market.
