Drink Up
Let’s start with a positive headline from foxnews.com: “Girls sell lemonade to raise money for family of fallen Colorado police officer.” Kudos, ladies.
I’ve come across a word I don’t recall having seen before — satrap. In the novel I’m reading it refers to “a subordinate official or henchman,” its secondary definition according to Miriam-Webster. It primary is: “governor of a province in ancient Persia.” The narrative takes place in the eastern world, 1876. I doubt I’ll ever use the word again.
From an article at nypost.com by Kenneth Garger, edited by yours truly: California legalized recreational marijuana sales in January 2018. That didn’t stop illegal growers. Last month authorities confiscated $1 billion of illegally grown weed. Seems the illicit trade will flourish even when a drug is legalized.
Here’s an NYP headline that won’t surprise anyone: “US alcohol consumption rose dramatically during COVID-19 lockdowns.” Party on, Garth.
I do surveys online to earn cash or Amazon gift certificates. The toughest question/choice I come across is: “Do you believe people can be trusted?” or “You can’t be too careful.” I usually check the latter but it never feels quite right. After all, the world is not comprised entirely of politicians.
I don’t have a problem with folks going door to door pushing Covid vaccines — as long as there is no coercion.
The weather cooperated nicely today, cloud cover reducing the heat, and the rain holding off. I packed up 15 minutes early when drops fell. They ceased before the books were all in the car. My thanks to Ira, who bought a review of TV shows from 1946-’87 and Encyclopedia Horrifica: The Terrifying TRUTH! About Vampires, Ghosts, Monsters, and More by Joshua Gee; and to the woman who selected a large hardcover in Russian; and to Wolf, who took home Murder 101 by Faye Kellerman, The 13-Minute Murder by James Patterson and Jim Cramer’s Stay Mad for Life: Get Rich, Stay Rich (Make Your Kids Even Richer) by Cliff Mason; and to the lovely young woman who purchased The Stranger in the Mirror by Sidney Sheldon, Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner and Bittersweet by Colleen McCullough; and to the young man who chose 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog by Kyra Sundance and Chalcy; and to Alice, who jumped on The First Lady by James Patterson.
