Emily Says & More
Each morning I post a quote on my Twitter feed. My presence there is almost exclusively mercenary. Once in a while there is an interesting or sad tweet at the top of my page to which I’ll respond. Other than that I’m there for the free publicity the site allows. Today is the anniversary of Emily Dickinson’s birth, so I scanned her page at brainyquote.com for words of wisdom. Not only did I find a cool quote immediately, there were a total of four relevant to the novel I hope to self-publish soon. I chose “The brain is wider than the sky.” This doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with intelligence. It simply reflects the tangents the mind is capable of reaching, which the protagonist experiences. The second is “The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.” Three times during the narrative, a day in Vito’s life, he is overwhelmed by such a feeling. The third is “I’m nobody, who are you?” Vito is frequently putting himself down, suffering doubt throughout the book. The fourth is “Behavior is what a man does, not what he thinks, feels, or believes.” I sure hope so, as Vito’s thoughts are occasionally foul. A shout out to the Belle of Amherst. Here’s the birthday girl:
NFL: More hope for Patriots-haters. They seem lost… Have the Broncos finally found a QB in rookie Drew Lock, second round pick out of Mizzou? He’s been stellar two straight weeks… It’s nice to see Bears’ QB Mitch Trubisky playing well after having struggled mightily… The Steelers refuse to go away, winning their second straight behind QB Devlin Hodges, a 2019 free agent out of Samford College, a Division I program. He was a four-year starter for the Alabama school and put up impressive stats… QB Ryan Tannehill, who was hot and cold for the Dolphins, is playing like an MVP for the Titans… Chargers QB Phillip Rivers turned back the clock Sunday, a near flawless performance after several stinkers in a row. And RB Austin Ekeler is terrific rushing and receiving. He too was a free agent, 2017, out of Western Colorado College, a Division II school… The fact that it took a late TD for the Eagles to tie the Giants, and OT to beat them shows how far they’ve fallen. How weak is the NFC East? It may be captured with a 7–9 or 8–8 record… Here’s Lock:
And now Hodges:
And Ekeler, whose teammates must surely call him Ek:
Since it wasn’t raining, I decided to set up shop beside my car, which was sitting in one of the prime parking spots in terms of the floating book shop. I put out only 20% of the wares. It was an hour-and-a-half before it started sprinkling. My thanks to the woman who bought the Word Find magazine in large print, and to Marina, who purchased two paperbacks in Russian; and to the Quiet Man, who went home with the oldies CD I burned yesterday. Since the rain was so light, I waited beside the old Hyundai after I’d packed everything away. The strategy worked. Stu came by and left with the remaining six DVDs and, 15 minutes later, as I’d hoped, Ira approached and smiled as I showed him The M.I. Hummel Album, a pictorial of their figurines. As soon as it was donated last week, I knew he’d want it.
