The annual Geminids meteor shower, up to 120 shooting stars appearing per hour, can be seen around the world. The peak period is today and tomorrow and will last till Christmas Eve. The name derives from the fact that the barrage seems to emanate from the Gemini constellation. Photo from Space.com:

Headline from nypost.com: “Boston mayor defends ‘electeds of color, no whites’ holiday party after invitation backlash: ‘Honest mistake’.” Imagine if someone organized a whites only party.

Does the following headline show that Republicans are as guilty of overspending as Democrats? From NYP: “GOP critics decry ‘regulatory harassment’ as FCC denies Elon Musk’s Starlink $900M in subsidies.” Why give a subsidy to one of the richest men on the planet?

RIP UK beauty Shirley Anne Field, 87. Born in London, abandoned as an infant, a foster child, she did modeling to pay for acting lessons. Her screen career spanned 1955–2014. She also did a few stage performances. She had mostly minor roles until she was cast in The Entertainer (1960), starring Laurence Olivier. There are 75 titles under her name at IMDb. Other notable films: Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), Peeping Tom (1960), Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), The War Lover (1962), Kings of the Sun (1963), Alfie (1966). On TV she appeared in 42 episodes of the Santa Barbara soap opera, eleven of Buccaneer, four of a Lady Chatterley miniseries, four of Madson, five of Where the Heart Is, and she did many single guest shots, including Murder, She Wrote. Married once for eight years, she was a mom of one. Kudos, Madam. Photo from Google Images:

I find this newsmax.com headline very amusing: “Fmr Facebook DEI Manager Pleads Guilty to $4M Theft.” While I love FB’s enabling of socialization, I deplore its politics, so I look on this as a bit of karma.

Interesting contrast in back-to-back NM headlines: “Dow Closes at Record High Above 37,000.” “US Money Reserve: Americans Stressed About Rising Prices.”

The House impeachment vote went completely along party lines. Democrats who resisted the temptation to crossover were very wise, as the administration would likely have retaliated, as it has so many times. Now it’s all in the GOP’s lap, and I have zero confidence in it in such matters. Democrats are infinitely superior at politicking and mudslinging, especially given mainstream media bias.

I spent about half of today’s session of the floating book shop keeping warm in the car. My thanks to the kind folks who combined to buy 15 books and two DVDs in Russian. Here’s what sold in English: The Matisse Stories by A.S. Byatt, Pandora’s Daughter by Iris Johansen, a massive Modern Sculpture pictorial, Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Point and Line to Plane by Wassily Kandinsky, An Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques of Photography Volumes One and Two by John P Schaefer. Still a ton of stuff to unload.
