Fighting Back

Good news on the Covid front in an article by Will Feuer at nypost.com: “… Merck and its partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics announced Friday that it plans to apply for emergency approval of its oral antiviral treatment for COVID-19 after the experimental drug showed ‘compelling results’ in clinical trials.” Even better for me, as I’ve been a long-time holder of stock in Merck, started with 25 shares in the early ‘90’s, up to 205 after several splits, despite selling shares to recoup the original investment.

According to an NYP article by Glenn H. Reynolds: “More than 11 percent of American households are homeschooling their kids. The numbers among black and Hispanic households are now even higher than this average.” Who can blame them?

Tidbit from an article at NYP by sports media critic Phil Mushnick: “Here’s my offer: If Drew Brees, now shamelessly shilling for an NBC-partnered sports gambling operation in TV ads, truly believes that parlay bets are good wagers, I’ll book all of his — at the same odds offered by his guys.” Kudos for the umpteenth time, sir.

My thanks to my buddy Bags for passing along this video by Toby Keith. It captures America’s current climate:

It looks like Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, who violated a gag order against posting on social media, is going to be the focal point of a political battle. He has been jailed, and supporters and detractors are entrenching. Scheller has being highly critical of the Afghan pullout. According to taskandpurpose.com, he has received the Bronze Star Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, an Army Commendation Medal with combat “V,” and three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals. He has been serving since 2004. Hopefully, common sense will lead to a just settlement of the issue.

I’m getting spoiled in terms of the floating book shop — another gorgeous day, more solid sales. My thanks to the kind folks who donated and bought stuff. Here’s what sold: nine DVDs, one CD; nine books in Russian; No Greater Love by Danielle Steel; Going Going Gone: Vanishing Americana, a pictorial by Susan Jonas and Marilyn Nissenson; and the beautiful The World Atlas of Street Photography by Jackie Higgins and Max Kozloff. Special thanks to the guy who gave me a pair of night vision glasses. Wow, are they cool! Only problem is I’m not sure they offer UV protection.
