Finds
From an article at foxnews.com by Michael Hollan, edited by yours truly: A Canadian antique shop owner recently purchased the contents of a home that had belonged to a music teacher who was a hoarder. He paid ten grand, knowing only that there was a grand piano inside. Containers were piled to the ceiling, some filled with designer clothing. There were silver dollars, wallets full of cash and bags that reportedly contained gold and diamond rings. A ring was found stuffed inside a shoe and small bars of silver were tucked inside a pile of leaflets. The guy documented his boon on his youtube channel. He estimates he’s made $400,000 on the investment. Kudos. This is not him. I needed a pic for the blog:
Great headline at nypost.com: “Turd Reich: Hitler’s toilet expected to fetch up to $15K at auction.”
I didn’t expect to open the curbside book shop today, but the weather wasn’t bad. There were actually dollops of sunshine. I put out 90% of the wares, leaving two heavy boxes on the back seat of the old Hyundai. I spent half the session seated in the car. Given the long range forecast, the expected cold snap, it seems like it will be a slow melt. Tomorrow may be the last session for a while. I imagine the snow at my alternate site is piled higher than it was after December’s storm. Even though that spot gets sunshine almost the entire day, the accumulation was such that it will take at least a week to melt the mass away completely. We will now have both the ugliness of blackening snow and masks to deal with. I shouldn’t complain. The owner of the car parked behind mine spent at least an hour digging out from what the plow left him. Smartly, he tossed the snow into the street, where it was pulverized into water by passing cars. On Saturday I will enter my car from the passenger side. I’m hoping the path ahead will be reduced to slush by then. If not, it should be easy to clear… Usually I’m pissed after a goose egg session like this afternoon’s. I was so happy to be out there that it didn’t sting. A lot of folks wished me well. I chuckled as I noticed the guy that operates Waj’s food truck once a week approaching with a box cradled to his chest. I’d left it behind three weeks ago and assumed someone had taken it home. He was kind enough to store it in a cabinet in the food cart. Five of the hardcovers had ice clinging to them. I put them in the area below my rear windshield to dry out. My thanks… Sadly, I also learned of the passing of a sweet elderly woman from her son. She stopped to chat whenever she passed and donated books occasionally. RIP, Amalia. Thank you.
