Flesh
Movies!, channel 5–2 on OTA in NYC, has been running horror movies all October. I’ve recently viewed two with which I was completely unfamiliar. It! (1967), starring Roddy McDowell as an assistant museum curator who brings a large statue of a Golem to life, doesn’t fly and seems hokey. I was most interested in the lovely co-star, Jill Haworth. Born in Sussex, UK, her screen career spanned 1959–2001, 33 titles under her name at IMDb. She appeared in several big budget films: Exodus (1960), The Cardinal (1963), In Harm’s Way (1965). She even got to play Sally Bowles in Cabaret on Broadway. She passed away at 65 in 2011… Photo from Google Images:
I really enjoyed The Creeping Flesh (1974), which pairs Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee as rival Victorian era scientists probing the dark side. A Hammer production, it is lush and hardcore for its time, although the violence is often suggested rather than explicit. Another actress with whom I was unfamilar, Lorna Heilbron, does a good turn as someone who goes off the rails. Born in Glasgow in 1948, her career spanned 1968–2000, 42 titles under her name. She did a lot of TV. She is the widow of actor Nicholas Clay, mom of two. Photo from GI:

An NYP article by Marc Lallanilla details the use of Captagon, dubbed ‘the poor man’s cocaine,’ by terrorists, who use it to suppress fear and fatigue prior to carrying out operations. It’s cheap and easy to manufacture, the main hub Syria, whose economy was devastated by civil war. As one would expect, it is now one of the most popular recreational drugs among young, affluent people in the Middle East. How long before it is available here?

Don’t hate me, fellow goombahs. I really enjoyed Virtuoso brand frozen mushroom pizza. It was on sale for $3.89, the equivalent of three regular slices, so I took a shot. I bought another this morning, the last one in the freezer.
Perfect day to do business curbside. My thanks to the woman who bought Jane Brody’s Good Seafood Book: A Guide to Healthy Eating with More Than 200 Low-Fat Recipes; and to the old-timer who purchased The Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer; and to The Quiet Man, who selected Haunted America, a blend of fact and fiction from Publications International Ltd.; and to the gentleman who took home a bunch of books in Russian, including several in manuscript form I thought I would be leaving in the lobby two at a time, and a DVD of the original beloved Russian film production of The Twelve Chairs.
