For the Ages
77 years ago today allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy, sounding the death knell for Nazi evil. Many were teenagers thousands of miles from home. The world will never repay the debt owed those brave men.
Speaking of WWII, headline from nypost.com: “Oil painting by Winston Churchill set to sell for $2 million.”
And a headline right above it that had me chuckling because the item is worth more than the aforementioned: “Tom Brady sets yet another NFL record as rookie trading card sells for $3.1M.”
Fauci should adopt the Seinfeld Uncle Leo defense: “I’m an old man, I’m confused.”
Is the situation finally about to change in Oregon? Here’s a snippet from a foxnews.com article by the intrepid Andy Ngo: “More than two dozen suspected Antifa rioters have been charged in Portland in the past two weeks…” Hopefully it won’t be more turnstile justice.
Definition of sucks: Spain’s John Rahm had a six-shot lead after the third round in this week’s stop on the PGA tour. He had to withdraw because of a positive Covid test.
I’m not gonna pretend to be a fan of classical music, although there are a few pieces I enjoy. I appreciate great skill no matter the genre. Last night I watched another of Rich Beato’s music appreciation videos, which are almost always about pop and rock. This one focused on an artist unfamiliar to me. Born in Argentina in 1941, Martha Argerich started playing piano at three and was in concert at eight. She avoids the limelight. She is considered one of the greatest pianists of all-time. According to Beato, she has often canceled appearances due to anxiety. It’s sort of comforting to know geniuses suffer self abuse like the rest of us. In the early 90’s she was stricken with cancer and saved by an experimental treatment at the John Wayne Cancer Center in California. Now 80, she continues to play concerts. Beato claims she works from memory. Married three times, she has a daughter from each husband. (Facts also from Wiki) Here’s a 20-minute clip from 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuPr9m98XQQ
The temperature may not have been higher than yesterday but it felt a lot warmer. Not a whole lotta action at the floating book shop today. My thanks to the gentleman who settled his one-day-old tab, and to the woman who bought Stephen King’s Firestarter.
