For the Birds

C’mon folks, pick it up. Headline from foxnews.com: “Chicago crime: 46 people shot, 7 killed during weekend violence.”

Great news on the pandemic front, headline from FN: “Nevada allows brothels to reopen after a year, with new protection in place.” In case you’re in the neighborhood. If you’re visiting Sin City, remember: “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

Here’s an excerpt from a Hitchcockian story at FN by Ann W. Schmidt, edited by yours truly: “More than 800 birds entered a house in Torrance, California, through the chimney last Wednesday evening. According to the owner, they stayed inside for several days, flying throughout the interior. And days later 1000 birds got stuck in the chimney of a home a few hours north, in Montecito. Here are two pics I found at Google Photos. Not sure if it’s one from each house:

And here’s the beautiful Tippi Hedren in the 1963 classic, set in northern California, from the master of suspense:

Each year I used to look forward to when the heat stopped rising in my apartment. Now 70, I hate how cold it is inside. It feels warmer outside. At night my garb is T-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie. Pathetic.

It was mostly frustration today at the floating book shop as I set up in an awkward location and rain was a constant threat, sprinkles falling occasionally. I didn’t bother displaying my own books, which always gives the session the feel of lost opportunity. My thanks to Wolf, who donated a few books in Russian and four CDs of standards. My thanks also to the gentleman who bought Ella Fitzgerald’s The Best of the Songbooks, a steal at two bucks; and to the young man who purchased a thriller in Russian, which Wolf suggested to him. The best part of the day occurred as I walked toward CVS and noted that the prime parking spot in terms of the book shop was available. Even though I was only a half block away, I expected it to be taken by the time I got there. Fortunately, it wasn’t. Unfortunately, rain is in the forecast for the entire week.
