RIP World Golf Hall of Fame member Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, 88. Born poor in Puerto Rico, he earned money at seven carrying water on a sugar plantation. When he noticed caddies were earning more money than him, he became one. Self taught, he was a scratch golfer by twelve. He idolized a baseball player in San Juan named Chi Chi Flores, and friends bestowed the nickname. He turned pro in 1960. He won eight tournaments on the PGA tour, 22 on the Seniors’, and seven others. He had four top-tens in majors. Lively, jovial, he was a fan favorite who often went into a swashbuckling routine after sinking a long putt. The Chi-Chi Rodríguez Youth Foundation, an afterschool program, was established to help troubled kids. He is a member of the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. He made a cameo in Welcome to Mooseport (2004), in which he is seen golfing with the United States President, as portrayed by Gene Hackman in his final film role. He is the subject of Roberto Alcazar’s film Bullfighter on the Green. He lent his name to the video game Chi Chi’s Pro Challenge Golf. Here’s a quote attributed to him: “Playing golf is not hot work. Cutting sugar cane for a dollar a day — that’s hot work. Hotter than my first wristwatch.” Married from 1964 until the death of his beloved in 2021, he was a dad of one. Maravilloso, Senor. Is this karma? Headline from nypost.com: “Detransitioners sue Planned Parenthood for gender malpractice — as our tax dollars fund it.”
Iraq seemed to have been making impressive progress, now this, headline from newsmax.com: “Iraq Debates Legalizing Marriage for 9-Year-Old Girls.” According to the article by Newsmax Staff, the current age is 18. WTF?
Among today’s many celebrations, it’s National Book Lovers Day. Excuse me while I blow my own horn:
I made the wrong choice today, playing it safe by setting up the Anti-Inflation book at a nearby viaduct — and it didn’t rain! And I didn’t sell a single item. Fie! The taste of humble pie is bitter.
