RIP Peter Marshall, 98. Born Ralph Pierre LaCock in Huntington West Virginia, he was drafted in 1944 and stationed in Italy, where he became a disc jockey in Naples. In the 1950s he was part of a comedy act with Tommy Noonan, appearing in night clubs, on television variety shows, and in film. He was active on the Broadway and London stage. He reluctantly accepted the job of hosting Hollywood Squares, expecting to spend just 13 weeks with the program. His run lasted 15 years, more than 5000 episodes, and brought him four Daytime Emmys. His subsequent TV forays, including an eponymous variety show, were not as successful. There are 48 titles under his name at IMDb in the category of Actor and three as Writer, screen career spanning 1949–2011. Most of his appearances were in TV. His big screen credits include The Return of Jesse James (1950), Ensign Pulver (1964), Rabbit Test (1978), Annie (1982). He hosted the excellent two-hour PBS special The Big Band Years. He narrated the Rose Marie documentary Wait for Your Laugh (2017). He is a member of the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame. Married three times, he was a father of six, including two stepchildren. His son, Pete LaCock, had a nine-year career in MLB as a firstbaseman. Awesome, Sir. Facts also from Wiki, photo from Google Images:
Headline from nypost.com: “Widow finds late husband’s wedding ring near a tree they planted just after they got married — 61 years later.” Very cool.
From NYP regarding Subway: “Fast food giant calls ’emergency’ meeting with franchisees as sales plummet: sources.” It was barely a bargain when foot-longs were five bucks. They will be reduced to $6.99. Include me out.
Headline from foxnews.com regarding Virginia: “Purple state’s Republican governor takes victory lap over neighbors with $1B surplus.” Kudos, Sir.
Among today’s many celebrations, it’s National Tell A Joke Day. Here’s one I found at physics.byu.edu:
Late one night in the capitol city a mugger wearing a ski mask jumped into the path of a well-dressed man and stuck a gun in his ribs.
“Give me your money!” he demanded.
Indignant, the affluent man replied, “You can’t do this — I’m a U.S. Congressman!”
“In that case,” replied the robber, “give me MY money!”
Not much action on this muggy day at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. My thanks to the kind folks who bought four 3D art works between them, and to the young man on a skateboard, who purchased Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy; and to the young woman who selected A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry; and to the gentleman who gave me a small, never used CD player, which will come in handy since my laptop doesn’t have one. I can now catalog the 50 or so CDs I burned for my former car’s player and put them up for sale. I predict that when I finish, the song lists I printed out will turn up. Special thanks to the Lady Eve, as we finally figured out how to get By the Numbers by yours truly onto her Kindle. I emailed her a direct link — duh!
