Headline from nypost.com: “I ate bull testicles and penis at one of NYC’s hottest new restaurants — was it worth the hype?” Ewwwww!
Last night Movies!, channel 5–2 on OTA in NYC, ran This Side of the Law (1950), starring Kent Smith as a vagrant who resembles a missing millionaire. He is hired by an attorney to impersonate the man. Given the implausibility, I didn’t expect much. Even if sexual relations were not involved, the family would note the differences. The plot took a turn for the better when the ruse was discovered about halfway through the narrative. I enjoyed Janis Paige’s turn as the nasty sister-in-law. There are 104 titles under her name at IMDb, career spanning 1944–2001… Viveca Lindfors received top billing as the wife. Her career began in her native Sweden in 1940 and ran until 1995. She was also active on the stage. She won an Emmy in 1990 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, Life Goes On. She wrote and directed one film: Unfinished Business (1991)… John Alvin plays the jilted brother. His career spanned 1943-’94, 180 credits, largely in TV from ’51 onward… Smith starred in Cat People (1942), his second film. His career spanned ‘36-’78, 138 credits. He too made the transition to mostly TV roles… Robert Douglas plays the shyster. His career spanned ‘31-’82. He both acted, 64 credits, and directed, 41 credits, and never left one for the other. He was at the helm of scores of TV shows, only two theatrical releases… Richard L. Bare directed This Side of the Law. His career spanned ‘39–2007, 121 titles under his name, including a series of shorts titled So You Want…, which he also wrote, comprising most of his 71 credits in that category. He lived to 101. Everyone mentioned is deceased. Here are Smith & Paige in character:
It’s National Cupcake Day. I’m so blue right now I’d like to wolf down a dozen. It’s been one of those days, and I’m too spoiled to handle it well. All the issues are minor but one, and that lone setback dashed hope that had been building for a week. Still, compared to what many suffer, it is laughable. The frustration continued trying to put together this blog. It was as if someone was removing the photographs I uploaded.
Not much action at the floating book shop on this gorgeous day. My thanks to Wolf, who bought two more titles in Russian, and to the gentleman who purchased another; and to the one who took home John Grisham’s Runaway Jury.
