The manslaughter charge against ex-Marine Daniel Penny has been dismissed. One remains: criminally negligent homicide, which carries a maximum punishment of four years in prison. I hope the jury finds him innocent. I’m confident President Trump would pardon him if found guilty, ending the outrage. Deliberation resumes Monday.

RIP MLB stalwart Bill Melton, 79. Born in Mississippi, he played outfield and first and third base. He had a ten-year career in the big leagues, the first eight with the White Sox, the last two with the Angels and Indians. He was an all-star in 1971, the year he led the AL in home runs, 33. Overall, he hit .251 and socked 160 homers. After he retired he tried his hand at business, then returned to baseball, working in the Sox front office, then doing TV analysis in the Windy City. He is survived by his wife and two children. Well done, Sir.

I didn’t have the pits to endure the icy wind, so I passed on the book shop for the second straight day. Since I had time to fill, I headed to T-Mobile to see if my internet connection could be improved. My thanks to the woman who replaced my device at no cost. The prior one was a couple of generations old. As soon as the new one was plugged in I noted that three bars were illumined instead of the usual two. Unfortunately, the same has occurred — one good hour followed by a major slowdown in performance. Fie! I unplugged the device from the machine before my three PM nap. It seems okay for the moment. Maybe that will become my new strategy.
