Headline from newsmax.com: “Argentina’s Milei Cuts 5,000 Govt Jobs in Overhaul.” I admire the move but anticipate big blowback from those who support big government, which seems to be the majority, despite its negative effects. Trouble is, will an economy that has been hampered by big government produce jobs for those let go? My guess is citizens will tire of austerity, as has happened so frequently worldwide. Stay tuned… Meanwhile in the USA, from NM: “Congress Struggling to Avert Automatic Spending Cuts.” A whole one-percent! How will anyone survive?

Last night while watching a photo array at youtube, a very special picture popped up. Here’s a still of two American icons starring in a 1954 episode of General Electric Theater, The Dark, Dark Hours. Photo from Google Images:

It’s National Fruitcake Day — choose your punchline.

Is anyone demanding a Russian cease fire in Ukraine?

RIP Tom Smothers, 86. Born on NYC’s Governors Island, he grew up in southern California. His dad survived the Battan Death March but died aboard a POW ship and was buried at sea. Tom and his brother Dick graduated from San Jose St.. Tom competed in the pole vault and in gymnastics. The pair originally intended to be folk musicians. The act evolved to include sibling rivalry comedy and fans ate it up. Tom was a regular on The Steve Allen Show. The brothers then starred in a sitcom, My Brother the Angel, that lasted one season, 32 episodes, ‘65-’66. Tom will be remembered most for the rebellious The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which ran from ‘67-’69, 71 episodes, and featured topical humor that created controversy and eventually led to cancellation. Tom was a producer and the unbilled head writer, overseeing a staff that included Steve Martin, Don Novello, Rob Reiner and Pat Paulsen. The show was nominated for seven Emmys, winning two. The brothers played acoustic guitar on John Lennon’s Give Peace a Chance. While Tom made several appearances on the big screen, his major impact was on TV, his swan song a voiceover on a 2009 episode of The Simpsons. Married three times, the last union from 1990 until his death, he was a father of three. Well done, Sir. Thanks for the laughs. Photo from GI:

Drizzle put the kibosh on the floating book shop and it’s not looking too promising for tomorrow, either. Fie!
